Apple had a 98 per cent market share

Victory down under
Mon Dec 14 2009, 12:50

THERE IS GREAT NEWS for Apple in that it had briefly sewn up the computer market on one continent.

According to Stat Counter Apple's OSX was the operating system of choice for 98 per cent of the population of Antarctica in the middle of this year.

Windows users might laugh, but it is clear that those penguins are not all Linux users as many had thought. We also notice that the use of OSX dropped in the later part of the year. We guess the Apple fanboys on the continenent must have all gone home.

An INQUIRER photographer snapped this picture that shows the stark individuality of Apple users in the Antarctic thinking different. µ

@hmmm "Windows 7 wipes the floor with OS-X and replaces Windows XP"

I've been using OSX for 10 years now. I'm a Mac, and Windows 7 was my idea. lol

There's late-to-the-party and missed-the-party, i think 10 years means you missed the party altogether lol. Good luck with an new outdated OS(VistaSP3)

Macs at South Pole needs to consider...

Arent most of the people there government wonks or others on the taxpayer's dime ??

Engineers dont usually go there, so the lack of real world types probably explains it.

Apparently there are people here

who can't read the words "in North America". According to statcounter.com (from which the ferrety one was extracting Antarctica numbers) the percentages and differences for NORTH AMERICA are as I stated. Read them yourself here http://gs.statcounter.com/#os-na-monthly-200811-200912

GLOBALLY Windows 7 now has a slight lead over OS X, and I'd be highly surprised if that lead didn't continue to increase. Even so GLOBALLY OS X numbers are up 32% year on year.

My original point was that the Ferrety one is continually predicting the downfall of Apple, yet every time we find a set of numbers they are higher. It will be a long time, if ever, before OS X and Windows approach sales parity. Meanwhile Nick's continual attempts to put down or denigrate Apples efforts are an unfunny joke.

Numbers....

Uh... SteveT... hate to burst your bubble... Total number of Windows 7 users topped all Mac users combined a few weeks ago...

Now then, what were you saying about brainwashing?

Steve T, how is OSX going from 7% to 11%, 87% more than Windows 7?

Steve T, how is OSX going from 7% to 11%, 87% more than Windows 7?

I'm confused.

7% - is that last years proportion of apple pc's v windows pc's yearly sales?

11% - is that this years proportion of apple pcs v windows pcs?

So where does the 87% more than Windows 7 come from?

What are apple pcs actually better at?

It's the processor, silly

In the old days, Macs used a PowerPC processor, which didn't give off much heat.

Now Apple has switched to the Intel x86 processor, like all the other PC manufacturers. The x86 belches out heat, which is a useful secondary bi-product in Antarctica.

Now everyone stays warm huddled with their MacBooks.

Somebody must have moved your cheese ... er, Apple.

Words from a long ago song describe these math games perfectly: "Nothin' From nothin' leaves nothin'"

Windows 7 wipes the floor with OS-X and replaces Windows XP at the same time you will give up on Apple? Last figures I saw for Mac OS-x were five percent. Not bad but when you are growing at half a percent over your "best year yet". It is a year when the opposition bring out an entirely NEW OS and it over-takes you in six weeks. Time to throw in the towel.

@hmmm

The Ferrety one has you brainwashed also? Even he isn't so stupid as to try to claim that Apple don't sell any machines in North America.
Up from 7.1 to 11.3% isn't insignificant. It's 87% more than Windows 7 at the moment, and more than 5 times the share of any other non Windows OS.

up 54 per cent from nothing is still nothing. No matter how you twist the figures fanboy you still have no friends.

Contracts

Firstly, the 98 percent is of the computers that are actually registered in Antartica. Most people with personal computers would have them registered back home. The same goes with most business side computers, they would be registered in the country of origin, whether it be Australia, France, Russia etc. Whats most likely happened is the American McMurdo station, which I believe has the highest number of residents of any country in Antartica (takes them 5 or more people to do the same tasks other stations manage with one person, so its a bit misleading) got a contract for new computers and registered them as McMurdo, hence the disproportionally large percentage in father of OSX.

Typical of the Ferrety one

Having failed to find any data to back his conviction that Apple's sales are falling and the company is doomed he tries to minimise things with spin.

Take a look at the North America numbers, they're particularly interesting. OS X up 59% in one year. How Windows 7 will effect things is going to be an interesting question, but so far all it's gains seem to have been at the expense of XP and Vista.

Browser

At least there is no sign of anybody down there being dumb enough to use Safari, Firefox 3.0 FTW.

Also it seems like the Win2003 and WinXP always add up to 100% (but still with FF). So do suppose they are dual booting a system or is it just whichever system the KVM is on?

What a betrayal - Linux doesn't deserve them!

Why ?

The colour of Apple kit fits matches with the local scenery. All the Windows boxes are black.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
