FRUITY PURVEYOR of cracked Imacs, Apple has decided not to ship any more of the machines for a couple of weeks.
On its webgroup, Jobs' Mob said sorry to customers amid reports of shipping delays affecting its recently introduced Imac computers.
Apple implies that the delay of at least two weeks is because the Imac has been a huge hit and it is working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.
However it did not actually say that too many orders was the reason for the delay. AppleInsider said that the real reason is that there are display problems with the expensive machines.
The Imac has been plagued with display problems and cracked screens. A support thread on Apple's website has 81 pages of comments and complaints from users with various Imac display problems.
Currently, Apple's online store lists shipping times of two weeks for both 27-inch Imac models. The two 21-inch Imac models are supposed to ship within 24 hours.
Some retailers are starting to run out of stock. Of course if there is a glitch in a production run then chances are that some of the stock that is available might be broken, too.
Apple has been replacing machines that have cracked screens, but has been getting a little difficult about fixing those with minor display problems like broken pixels. µ
The reason the displays are cracked is because the shipping boxes are too small and inadequate to protect the screens during shipment.
In effect, Apple's new green boxing policy has jumped up and bitten Apple in the bottom. Smaller boxes may be OK for an iPhone. But on a 27-inch piece of breakable, fragile technology. it's jut plain stupid.
Don't try to divert blame. It is still Apple's fault for ineptly packaging their iMacs, and also for delays in shipping replacements. Furthermore, with the price premium you pay for Apple hardware, one would expect that they'd take greater care in choosing screens that are not defective from the factory.
I guess it just goes to show again that Apple is nothing more than an average OEM charging above average prices, and that many of their customers are just suckers for thinking different.
This is INSANE. Apple products are GOD. They NEVER break down. NEVERRRRRRRRRRRR.
Berlusconi Marinara - it gets all up on you face -- Not another baloney sandwich!
This is what happens when you fire American workers who used to make your products, then deport the jobs to some despotic third world country that regularly uses prison labor for business, so you can hoard a few extra Billions and keep it from shareholders. It appears the 2nd Steve was never concerned with substance, only about style and Apple Style © is about Apple Sales. Would you rather have a Chinese Labor Camp iPhone or an American Worker one? Be sure and look up the problems and defects before you answer. By the way, reports are Apple STILL owns their old manufacturing facility in the East Bay, why not employ some of the 20% of Americans who are out of work with those Billions? I don't get Silicon Geeks gone rich.
Most of the comments received so far are biased inaccurate rants. Cracked screens, specifically glass screens, are most likely to have been damaged during shipment. No, it's not a plot by Apple or a lack of QA that lets cracked screen just pass on by. Nor is it due to cheaper parts being used than other vendors. A "dead pixel policy", though not actively advertised, is used by all vendors. http://vnuuk.typepad.com/pcw_interactive/2005/03/dead_pixel_poli.html
Display manufacturers do not guarantee pixel defect free pixel operation therefore PC manufacturers aren't inclined to offer more. Displays are very good today, with 99.9999% defect free pixels.

No vendor that I know of provides replacement of displays with what is considered minor defects as described by their policies. View policy statements prior to purchase and operationally inspect your PC prior to leaving the store will help but not eliminate dead pixel issue.
If there is in fact no shortage for the hot selling 27" iMac then I expect it is a packaging problem.
Apparently there is no more such a thing as quality control. There is no reason for broken screens and bad computers leaving the factory.Something smells bad here.It would be different if a oem was giving them a part that was going bad after a time.I hate to say it but if you want a mac bulit your own. Most quality venders have a 3 year, and some have a lifetime replacement on there parts. Its not hard to build a faster machine with the specs YOU want for a lot less money.
Yes I know you cant build a Imac but you can use your own imagination and make a really cool box.
@anonym
at least NV cards wait a couple of years before blowing up!
;o)
This is just another example of Apple cutting corners and not fully testing it's new holy machines to see if any heretics may have defiled the blessed design.
Seriously, as a Mac user(I own a 24 in late 2007 iMac) the problems with Apple's quality is becoming a problem. I will never buy another Apple 1 gen product because of the bugs/design issues Apple seems to miss.
I'm glad to see Apple step up this time and stop selling defective machines. I just hope that fully replace or refund those who bought these faulty Macs.
So what is the difference between Dell and Apple's hardware? Answer: nothing but a slick looking case and an Apple logo. Oh, I almost forgot about the Apple tax you must pay his holiness Pope Steve the 1st.
@Phil
Now we have proof!
you're a moron.
Serves them right for using ATI graphics cards!
(don't tell Charlie!)
