Mozilla executive says ditch Google for Bing

MOZILLA'S DIRECTOR of Community Development, Asa Dotzler has reacted negatively to anti-privacy comments made by Google's CEO, and suggested that users should switch their Internet searches from Google to Bing.

Today Dotzler writes, "I think that the thing that bothers me most about Google CEO Eric Schmidt's comment is that it makes clear that he simply doesn't understand privacy. That a company with so much user data on its servers is led by someone who just doesn't understand privacy is really scary to me and it should be scary to you as well."

He is referring to an interview broadcast on CNBC in which Schmidt, when asked whether users should treat his firm as a 'trusted friend', said, "If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place."

Obviously irked by Schmidt's apparent arrogance and disdain for privacy, he points readers in the direction of a software plug-in that lets users switch their search engine default in Mozilla's Firefox web browser from Google to Bing. He adds, "Yes, Bing does have a better privacy policy than Google."

Who can you trust? Well, apparently not Eric Schmidt and Google, according to Mozilla's Dotzler. µ

I'll keep using Google for my searches. I MIGHT stop using Mozilla, and switch permanently to Opera for browsing and e-mail. Talk about sour grapes!!

Short Memory

Some one here made this same comment, but yes I remember the Netscape fiasco, and MS "cut off their air supply". I remember some arrogant comments by the Netscape CEO about Netscape being the next operating system which prompted the MS response.

Here we are again Google has kept Mozilla afloat for the past 5 to 10 years with over 80% of their revenue coming from Google. So hey lets piss in Google's cornflakes so Google will cut off their air supply too. Some people just never learn. Firefox is now gone from my PC, because I am an Open Source supporter, and Mozilla has done an about face against the wind, now watch their slow inevitable decline along with MS.

Short Memory?

The guy who runs the operating system project that is the remnants of what is left from the monopolist Microsoft illegally screwing Netscape out of existence now wants to partner with Microsoft. Perhaps he should take a look back at what happened to development of the web browser once Microsoft got the dominant market share. New development stopped.

I like using Mozilla. It would be a shame for me to have to stop using it because the group is being run by an idiot.

Dotzler's Microsoft job application

Yes, sounds like Dotzler is going to the dark side, what with his blabbing on about how "trustworthy and privacy-respecting" Microsoft is (yes, the same Microsoft that is responsible for 99.99% of all computer users' data and ID theft due to its lackadaisical "black box" approach to software security).

Google at least has adopted the "do no evil" business ethic (something Microsoft blew out the door twenty years ago). But Google could certainly improve privacy -- like giving Chrome users the option of starting ALL browsing sessions as "incognito" (and not having to delete browsing history manually all the time - browser caches are one of the prime targets for mining details from banking and on-line shopping sites).

In any case, I hope someone in Mozilla puts a plug in Dozler's mouth soon. Open sourcers need to stick together, and Microsoft is no friend to us (and to anyone else but Microsoft).

Dotzler is a Hypocrite!

BTW, Asa Dotzler is a total hypocrite, given that Mozilla gets the vast majority of its funding (e.g. payroll) from Google. Thus, Dotzler's own income can be traced directly back to the Google sponsorship. If Dotzler is really so concerned about Google's privacy practices, perhaps he should man-up and find a new job where he isn't paid with Google's blood money.

That said, all corporations are dirt bags. And anyone who trusts one corporation over another is a fool. BTW, clear your browser cache and cookies often. I like CCleaner.

Google gone to the dogs

Quite apart from privacy issues, am I the only one who notices that Google search results are often pure rubbish? Over and over I run into situations where "A B" C shows more hits than A C. Impossible, of course, but it happens daily.

I started Googling while everyone around me was still Yahooing, but it's time to change.

Google is the Gog and Microsoft the Magog. They are both evil. So far though, the Gog didn't show too much it's teeth, but they are very sharp and vicious.

Yeah , Microsoft never looses data or has any problems with being breached .
Trust Bill G. he is friends of the Democratic Party , who are known for leaking data .

Bias perhaps...

It wasn't just three days ago that CNBC ran an adoring 'life and times' of Bill Gates. Last night, they run Google: 'The Evil Empire'(except it wasn't quite called that; just how it was presented).

I'm sorry. But does MS no longer have a stake in NBC? Is this all just a little too convenient? I know the masses will never pick up on these subtleties -lol. But can we get some investigative journalism, please?

IMO Schmidt is kind of right.

If mozzarella starts pushing bling as their default search engine on the next fireferret versions, it is gone off my systems.

Not that fireferret is my main browser anyway, I just keep it as the second option for the sites opera can't draw correctly.

Maybe it is time to try out that overhyped chrome-plated browser.

I use Scroogle in Firefox. It scrapes Google search results thereby giving you fairly decent search results coupled with none of Google's online stalking or their paid results.

Google seems better for me.

I have been using both Bing and Google for a few weeks now, and notice with contemporary subjects Bing definitely gets the pages I want faster, but when I need to do a technical search or a search for something scientific Google wins hand down.

I guess most people are interested in Tiger Woods latest girlfriend count, so Bing might have the better strategy overall, but for basic research still gotta go with Google.
