INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER AOL is once again its own company from today.
AOL and Time Warner met over a boardroom table in January 2000 and just a year later were joined together as AOL Time Warner. After nearly nine years together, the two companies have gone their separate ways in what has largely been an amicable split.
"As we look to the future on this important day for AOL, our company is focused on building the highest quality content for consumers and the best products and services for our advertising and publishing partners," said AOL's CEO Tim Armstrong.
"Our content sites and advertising platforms give AOL a unique seat at the Internet table and we intend to maximise these valuable assets and our scale to return our business to growth."
Friends of the couple will have their vested interests split with one share of AOL common stock to be distributed for every eleven shares of Time Warner common stock held as of 17:00 on 27 November, with any fractions being paid off in cash.
"With the separation of AOL, we've returned to our roots as one of the leading content companies in the world," added Time Warner Chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes.
"We're now better positioned to focus even more closely on driving the best possible performance at our content businesses in the most efficient way."
Although it hasn't aged well, now that AOL is back on the singles scene, it has been quick to start talking up its strengths, flaunting its 80 different branded and niche content sites, range of services and Internet advertising prowess. We'll soon see if it starts dating again, we guess. µ
It's still linked in with the boys. It may just be that it has a new mission. If so.. maybe in the first quarter of 2010 that will emerge.

So who owns Bebo now? I thought AOL bought it a while ago. Did Time Warner keep it?

That merger basically killed off half the wrestling business. For anyone who remembers.
Just wanted to share that.
Good. Now maybe AOL will down a twelve pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon, hop on a motorcycle with no helmet and race headlong into a telephone pole.
If ever there was an entity that was in dire need of a DNR order in the hospital-- AOL is it!
it's the over bloated family size fun pack for morons at twice the price of anyone else.
Maybe now without financial backing it can finally die the death it was due a decade ago
Do you remember all those AOL cd's?
Do you remember it's crappy all-in-one software for email and browsing etc?
Apart from being an ISP, what are AOL these days?
How much have the values of both companies changed over the past 10 years? Was it a failure?
