Facebook makes privacy settings more open

Not sure how that works
Thu Dec 10 2009, 13:22

FACEBOOK USERS might suddenly find that the things they thought to be secret could become public knowledge.

The social notworking site has revamped its privacy settings so it prompts users to post their status updates and personal information directly to the Internet for everyone to see.

The big idea is to give users more control over who sees the information they post on their personal pages, and it suggests users publish posts and personal information, such as work and education.

If you log on to Facebook you will get a transition tool that explains the changes and gives you an option to update your settings, either according to Facebook's recommendations or to preserve their existing settings.

However Facebook seems to be generally encouraging users to loosen their privacy controls.

Facebook's old privacy settings were confusing and only 15 per cent to 20 per cent of Facebook users have specified their privacy settings.

Privacy advocates are worried that users will expose too much about themselves, inadvertently or not.

It does happen. A mate of mine found out that his girlfriend was expressing undying love to another bloke on her "what are you thinking about section". He didn't even know she was on Facebook. µ

Lack of respect

"settings are quite easy to adjust"
ok, say that to the little kids using facebook, who have now found their profiles turned PUBLIC :S

It's a lack of respect for everyone.
Eve though you set everything to the highest privacy setting you could get, people still can see your PROFILE PIC and the pages you are fan of :S

This is ridiculous..

What's the point of privacy of I can't decide what to show and what not? :S

Outrageous

Facebook ought to be ashamed at this vile betrayal of all those who helped make it a success. I personally have complained to my governments privacy watchdog, to whom facebook already has a made a commitment to keep privacy level high.

On all fours, with ass in the air...

That's how I like my privacy settings.

I'm always looking for new jobs and find that having my 'pants around my ankles' when it comes to security on Facebook, helps people make the right kind of contact with me. It acts like a kind of sweet-recruitment-lube, I find.

Only to the Novice or cant be assed

The privacy settings are quite easy to adjust, just takes a bit of common sense.

Rememeber that facebook is a free service its not your facebook its facebooks's profile on you!

Dont like it leave it, when you joined a social site like this, it was your choice to share information.

Facebook is just a fad, it will fade just like twitter until the next new thing comes out.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
