The 3D future is so bright

You gotta wear shades
Wed Dec 09 2009, 15:00

A REPORT commissioned by the UK communications watchdog has found that 3D television will require special glasses for at least another decade.

In the paper, which probably only makes sense to the authors and Doc out of the Back to the Future films, consultants Zetacast looked at the technology options available to broadcasters, comparing side-by-side Advanced Video Coding (AVC) against the 2D plus Difference (2D+D) method of 3D TV transmission.

Presumably after watching a lot of 3D telly recently, Zetacast ruled that going for the former technology could pave the way for for a better 3D service, though not without some drawbacks. For example, it said that pictures might not render with enough precision for live, real time events.

Having decided that no real breakthroughs are likely to be made until 2020, it suggested that we should get used to wearing the polarised or coloured glasses required by current systems. For now at least, and apparently for 10 years to come as well.

AMD is also looking forward through green and red tinted spectacles, and has adopted the as-yet-unavailable Stereoscopic 3D format.

AMD said that it will showcase the technology at CES next year. "AMD has a long, proud tradition of delivering leading technologies to market - technologies that have a meaningful and positive impact on the PC experience," said Rick Bergman, senior vice president, AMD Products Group.

"Stereoscopic 3D is set to be one of these technologies, and that's why AMD has committed the time and resources to ensure that when Blu-ray stereoscopic 3D is ready for the world, AMD will be ready to bring it to consumers, just as we have done recently with DirectX 11-capable hardware to support DirectX 11 gaming." µ

Why a TV?

I don't get it. If you've got to wear some big funny electronic glasses, what do you need the actual TV for?

3D TV

I'm sure 3D tv will do just as well 10 years from now as the Nintendo Virtual Boy did back in 94.

3D TV will fail

Consumers are just trading up to HDTV, so they are not going to be receptive to an immediate switch to a new standard.

With special glasses, 3D TV requires attentive viewing. A lot of TV viewing is casual, with people moving around or doing something else.

3D TV would work only if it could be implemented without special glasses.

3d my arse (or my 3d arse)

I watched the Derren Brown thing the other week on Channel 4 - couldn't have been more disappointed. It only looked a bit more 3d than normal, and everything looked funny colours.

Surely since everyone's eyes are different there needs to either be some adjustability in the glasses, or have them made by an optician or something?

Assuming everyone has to do it, but there's nothing fun aboat a queasy stomach.

I'll give it a miss.

!

No one caught onto the fact that people do not want too look like idiots wearing these silly looking glasses just to watch a TV show?

My future certainly is not bright

I used to back ATI 100%, but was swayed by the sparkly, sparkly offer from Santa Clara

Wow

What a mistake

I've spent the last 2 years running backwards and fighting fires

Wish I had enough money left for a 5800 series card :~(

Not just for a while

Nvidia has been pushing stereo 3d for donkeys, and been doing a good job at it as well.

Not only have they been supporting their own solutions, but they have also been supporting Anaglyphic (red+cyan) glasses and other 3rd party solutions such as polarized glasses/screens and shutter glasses.

I remember using this well before vista (so perhaps 2003-4 at a guess). So AMD is atleast 5 years slow here.

On top of this i recall Magic Carpet by bullfrog offered numerous stereo3d solutions back in 1994.

I'm sure stereo3d probably predates this.

Unrelated:
AMD sucks - cheap and powerful, but dodgy Linux support and no stereo3d drivers have been my reasons for steering clear of them for the last 5 years.

old news

Nvidia has had AMD's "new 3d technology" for a while now. Stereoscopic glasses are nothing new...

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
