External build of OS X 10.6.3 is almost out

With developers in 48 hours
Wed Dec 09 2009, 10:18

APPLE IS ABOUT to release the first external build of Mac OS X 10.6.3, the next incremental update to Apple's Snow Leopard operating system.

AppleInsider reports that the forthcoming builds are likely to be released to some developers in the next 48 hours.

It is not clear what Apple plans to fix in the new update, dubbed 10Dxx. The last version corrected a guest account bug that could potentially delete a user's account data.

The Apple genius programmers had written in something which could wipe the data by logging in and out of a guest account on a Snow Leopard machine. The update also included support for the Mac maker's new multi-touch Magic Mouse.

Apple has been going like the clappers on the next version of Mac OS X, managing updates every few weeks.

Of course it is not saying when the new operating system will be released. Smart money is on it releasing a new version at the next Triumph Herald of the Will style Macworld rally in February. µ

Haha

Yeah I did generalise a bit to make my point Kevin =P.

I just tried to point out the major releases in order to prove the adage.

Microsoft's getting a bit more linear in they're naming now, so 8 and 9 are working titles. Maybe we shouldnt expect much of 8...

Anyway, the point is that while every other version of Windows sucked, every version of Mac is still inferior and incapable.

Plus since I build systems, it makes it hard for me to even consider Mac.

You have to pay respects to Apple's marketing though. They're great at selling overpriced fruit-themed crap to the ignorant.

Good Point Muhammed

It's nearly an adage, every second Windows is great:

DOS 1: Great
DOS 2: Not so great
DOS 3: Great
DOS 4: Pretty horrible
DOS 5: Great
DOS 6: Too late
3.1: Great
95: KILL IT WITH FIRE
97: Great
Me: See 95
XP: Great
Vista: Bad
7: Brilliant

Commenter expertise

"1. OS X 10 Snow Leopard doesn't boot into 64-bit by default. And switching between 32-bit and 64-bit causes a big performance hit. The only SKU that boots into 64-bit by default is OS X server."
Nope, it doesn't. There is NO "big hit" on Windows and even more so on OSX.
Here's the reson: In OSX kernel and userspace have separate address spaces, so it has to switch anyway.
That's how 64bit apps run on a 32bit kernel.
Now that kernel and userspace have seperate address spaces, a 32bit kernel has the full 4GB of addresses all to itself. You can fill these with
1) kernel extensions (millions)
2) memory management (for petabytes of ram)
3) a few gigabyte of kernel (lol)

Muhammetard

3. Snow Leopard is much more akin to a service pack and Apple is charging $29. MS Doesnt charge for Servicepack.

*coughwindows7cough*

Don't kid yourself. It's Vista with a prettier(?) desktop

Give it a rest, Ferret

"Apple has been going like the clappers on the next version of Mac OS X, managing updates every few weeks."

Umm..... Wrong, ferret boy. There have been TWO updates since Snow Leopard was released, not 'updates every few weeks'.

I guess you were sick the day they taught journalism, you know.... accuracy in reporting, etc..

Only someone as daft as you could take news of a developer build of the next Snow Leopard update and distort it into something completely untrue just to satisfy your craving for Apple bashing.

Someone at the Inq. FIRE this moron already!

And how many tens of dollars for this ServicePack !?!

1. OS X 10 Snow Leopard doesn't boot into 64-bit by default. And switching between 32-bit and 64-bit causes a big performance hit. The only SKU that boots into 64-bit by default is OS X server.
2. OpenCL/GCD can only throw CPU load on GPU. DX11 can do even both ways i.e.it can also run gpu on cpu yes 12-fps is slow but u can render gpu behaviour if u dont have that gpu.
3. Snow Leopard is much more akin to a service pack and Apple is charging $29. MS Doesnt charge for Servicepack.
4. Glorious OSX still live on MS's developed Office.
5. They say Vista was failure and nail in MS coffin. If those goofs track back. Win7 hit, Vista miss, XP hit, Me Miss, Win2k hit, Win95+IE aka Win97 Hit, Win95 miss, Win3.1 Hit, DOS 2000 miss, DOS 5/6/6.1 Hit.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
