A DODGY WEB OUTFIT that's been peddling fraudulent work-from-home scams has been sued by Google for associating its name with the schemes.
For years Pacific Webworks has been putting up Internet ads promising "up to $978 a day working from home". However all that punters who signed up got were recurring bills on their credit cards.
The scams are alleged to have flogged a kit claiming to enable people to make cash from Google.
Google is suing because the company uses Google's logo to flog its fraudulent come-ons. It is also miffed because some gullible victims have been beating on its door asking for refunds. The lawsuit alleges trademark infringement, unfair business practices and other charges.
In a statement Google said that the misleading ads try to take advantage of consumers in the midst of a difficult economy, and as the economic situation has worsened, the problem has only grown.
It said that thousands of people have been tricked into sending payment information and being charged hidden fees by questionable operations.
Google said it will continue cracking down on fraudulent sites, removing dodgy URLs from its web index, and permanently disabling dodgy Adwords accounts regardless of whether or not they use Google's trademarks. µ
Thanks for breaking the news on this. I had a friend call me up recently about this very program and looked around. Red flags almost went up immediatly, for one the program by all means appeared to be run by Google (at least that is what my friend thought), and it claimed you can make $1,700 a day posting links.
The fact of the matter is most entry level jobs at Google require at least a bachelors degree and they generally want a Masters. So right there you know your not working directly for google, so your left with the idea that you may get reimburesed by google through their Adsense program. Well if that is the case, it's not as easy as put up a link and checks start rolling in to the tune of $1,000 a day.
Bottom line, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Personally I really hate this company and the fact they are praying on innocent individuals and families who are trying to find legitimate work.
If your actively looking for work at home opportunities. You can look at elance.com or freelance.com both of which provide numerous businessess that are looking to hire independant contractors to perform work. Another legitimate company that will hire you at $10+ an hour to perform remote technical support/trouble shooting is Arise.com.
If you are looking for more legitimate work. I have assembled a listing of over 100 legitimate companies that will pay you to work from home. It took a lot of work to research and compile the list, so unfortunatly it is not free, but will save you 10's of hours of research. You can get the report at http://wahtypingjobs.wordpress.com
It's hard to show compassion for those who are undeserving of it. I don't consider these people faultless victims. The fact that these people believe these too-good-to-be-true scams is probably the cause of their poverty to begin with--and the reason they're seeking quick and easy solutions.
