Apple Imac punter tallies complaints

Users reveal problems
Tue Dec 08 2009, 12:42

VICTIMS of dodgy Imac build quality are airing their complaints at a website that keeps statistics about problems afflicting the fruit-themed machines.

We told you earlier that there were problems with the new Imacs, especially the top-of-the-line 27-inch model.

Now one Apple fanboy has done the unthinkable and stood up to the company. Scott Pronych has created a website to collect reports of problems with the machines.

Pronych started the site partly because his new 27-inch Core i7 based Imac arrived with a broken screen. By digging through Apple's support forum, Pronych identified 343 other users who had also reported problems with their new machines. He is recording and reporting statistics about the faults.

Cracked screens do show up among the reports but it looks like there are deeper problems, mostly related to the new Imac equipped with Intel's Core i7 quad-core processor.

The most widespread problem listed was a screen that flickered, "tore" or just went black, with 179 cases reported, or nearly half of the total.

So far there are 1,000 individual messages and it is easily the most read section on the Imac forum discussing problems.

Apple has not mentioned any problems with its Imacs but apparently has been exchanging broken systems for replacements.

Some users have complained that they've gone through three different machines before getting one that works.

There are signs, however, that Apple is starting to lose patience. One user whinged that Apple stopped replacing his Imac because it claimed the machine had only "minor screen problems".

However many other Apple fanboys have reported that they have had "no faults" with their machines.

Despite running a website that tallies flaws in Apple's products, Pronych says he is still a loyal Mac user.

Pronych said that the flickering display problem is not limited to the quad-core iMacs. Of the 179 cases, 94 involved dual-core Imacs while 85 involved Core i5 or i7 powered Imacs.

More than 81 per cent of all the problems Pronych found affected the 27-inch model. There were few reports of issues with the smaller 21.5-inch model.

Lately the volume of complaints has dried up, which seems to suggest that the more recent Imac production runs have not exhibited as many problems. µ

Right, We believe you!

"I'm not neccessarily a Nvidia fan but you don't see this issue with anyone using the GF9400M......"

Seems the power requirements, as well as the performance, is considerably different between the 9400M (a mobile GPU) and the HD4850! My experience in this field screams PSU, cooling or both.

It's the GPU not Apple

Guys, this is an issue with the ATI GPU not Apple. They have had similar issues w/ATI in the past. I'm not neccessarily a Nvidia fan but you don't see this issue with anyone using the GF9400M......

What kind of power supply does Apple use?

When you combine the i5 or i7 with the 4850 ati video card that can be too much for the power supply. I'm not sure if Apple uses the same power supply for all iMacs, but it would not surprise me.

IMO the i5/i7 iMacs are the best offering from the iMac family to date. I am no fanbot of Apple.

I just do not trust Apple anymore when it comes to quality hardware. They are taking too many short cuts.

IMO the i5/i7 iMac should be running with no less than a 650 watt power supply.

So maybe....

...some sort of better box packaging is needed?

That and maybe a more juicy powersupply?

I always wondered how good a PSU can be in such a small space.

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH

I work for a large Apple reseller and we have sold over 200 of the 27inch imac's and only had 1 back with a line down the screen.

Apple will sold hundreds of thousands of these unit worldwide and the amount of people reporting faults is small 2-4 %

If this was a wide spread issue Apple would have issues a recall!!!!

Oh and the comments by scott Apple only take your credit card details if you are out of your 90 days phone support from purchase which is the same for every other PC manufacturer!!!!

And yes i know as i have worked in the IT support industry for nearly 16 years working for companies like HP, Toshiba etc

Hardware beta testers

Just like it is wise not to buy a new OS until it is given a good run for bugs it is not wise to buy new hardware either, from anyone, even a new line of TVs should be given a good 6 months or so.

Bruised Apples?

As I am a former mac owner Apple pretends there are no problems with there machines.
If you do call to report a problem the first thing they want is your credit card number. You would be better off to buy the computer of your choice and put osx on it. Its illegal but at least you get what you want without the premium.
