FTC has a word with Nvidia about Intel

Former friend turns state's evidence
Fri Dec 04 2009, 10:19

THE US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has been chatting with Nvidia as part of its probe into Intel's business practices.

The Green Goblin has been moaning like a banshee over Chipzilla's business practices ever since the two companies fell out last year.

The FTC is interested to know what Intel has been up to in the graphics chip market and after hearing about Nvidia's whingeing has been wondering if the Green Goblin has something to complain about.

The Nvidia related probe was reported by BusinessWeek and surprisingly Nvidia has been quite forthcoming about helping the FTC with its inquiries.

Intel has about half of the graphics chip market and Nvidia supplies a fair chunk of standalone graphics chips at around 25 per cent of the market. Intel commands such a lead over the Green Goblin because it supplies "integrated" graphics built into the chipsets that accompany all of its processors.

But despite the efforts of Nvidia and ATI to take market share away from Intel, Chipzilla has seen its market share actually increase, mostly at the expense of Nvidia.

Nvidia claims that Intel's "bundling" tactics are causing it undue harm. AMD just got a $1.25 billion settlement from Intel for much the same behaviour, and similar practices are also spelled out in a complaint filed by New York's attorney general last month.

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang complained that Intel's tactics have been the most aggressive the company has ever seen by a competitor. Nvidia's Ion chipset that is used in laptops has been shafted by such Intel tactics, Huang claimed. µ

And what can FTC do?

Maybe in greater Cockfosters, but seriously, they intend to do what to the cost of white on rice? Do they even make a DX11 product?

@tripodal

"Be careful what you wish for, intel haters, if intel is suddenly banned from including thier own graphics. We will all pay, in one way or another."

You either have no idea what's going on (did you RTFA?), or possibly you are trying twist this to suite your own agenda?

It never has been or will be about Intel being banned from including onboard graphics. There is certainly nothing wrong with that legally.

What it is actually about, is banning Intel from paying OEM's to not use chips supplied by Intel competitors (Nvidia, AMD, ATI, VIA, etc). That practice is actually very illegal, and in more countries than just the USA. Japan, Korea, and Autralia busted Intel for this very practice already.

NVidia to FTC's side after AMD ditched FTC for Intel's settlement

Hopefully NVidia can help FTC recover some ground after AMD bailed out when Intel flashed some cash at AMD. Intel's bullying must stop!!! It was Via then and now it's Nvidia...

Today AMD/ATI is one company called DAAMIT here, twist of letters :-)

Whingers

I use NVidia GPU's,but I have no sympathy whatsoever for them.

When AMD can bring to market, the first DX11 GPU's, 6 months ahead of NVidia, then, it say's much about the internal workings of that company.

Leaving Y'al Where Found Yous....Market Manipulation....

As Ultee' Slowly Packs Microsoft RESEARCH Back Into Teak Boxes, Look At AMD share today $7.25. Secret Ultee', Before theULTIMAT took rule in 2006, Way back when first Started with theINQ in 1998, AMD Was $7.13 share. People Scoffed At Notion that AMD Has Telco Stake, yet its UnderStandable. Creeps With Microdope Tech Training Certs Where common as Flys, In 90s'..

Now After Putting AMD thru Ringes & Ringer, to $40 then Smashed Like SE Pumkin to $1.58. Heres Vondrasher Point, If You Want to Effect Progress, Effect heavy losses.

SOMEONE GOT TO SAVE MY lIFE TODAY & VALUE REFLECTS THAT TREMENDOUS URGE. People Can Fart FTC or Nvidia, Yet Its Mere Staying Alive that Motivates People, Especially In Time of Crisis & Thats Now DOWNSTREAM. INCOMING....

Re:This is very bad.

We are screwed either way. Amd is working on an integrated gfx on their processors, and intel. Nvidia is going to be left high and dry if they don't do something. I have lots of friends at AMD and they said they don't give a shit about 57xx or 58xx it's all about integrated. That's where the money at. They are working hard to push that through. The engineering samples looks amazing I wish I would have went into asic design.

Either way we are screwed. nvidia wins high costs because of two chips. If Intel wins they will own the market and can charge what they want.

This is very bad.

I for one, do not want to see the cost of every computer I sell, increased by having to install discrete graphics.

Bundling graphics has been a great thing for driving down cost.

Be careful what you wish for, intel haters, if intel is suddenly banned from including thier own graphics. We will all pay, in one way or another.

And please dont comment that other vendors supply boards with onboard graphics for less. Intel boards are better, last longer and have much better support.

I havent seen asus / gigabyte / ecs overnighting replacement parts for warranty work.

Lots of nvidia hater/ATI fanboys

I bought a 5870 today so I'm not bias but you guys have so much hate damn. Really for all the shit that has gone on. Do you hate the xbox 360 with it's 80% failure rate. Or ps2 with it's faulty laser. Or lines of samsung tvs with their faulty power supplies? Or Sharp with their banding on their lcd tv sets and refusing to replace them. Or GM for their crappy cars. Or google for recording all your data. ya nvidia is bitching just like all the other companies out there. Who the hell cares. I think you are forgetting that a company is in business to make money not to unlock their video card so you can use it with their competitors or make hardware they can't license software for.

They want to make as much money as possible.!! You are like a chick, just don't buy their product. It's just that easy. Or if you want to bitch go find your girlfriends and you can all bitch together.

Squealing rat hypocrites

They cry foul to the FTC after getting bitchslapped by Intel because they tried to play the bully part. Sorry Nvidia, that is only possible for companies with real weight, not for lightweights like you.

By the way, why don't they also have a little chat about how they steal from their own customers by disabling their video cards if they try to use them in conjunction with an AMD one in the same system?

Grade A Hypocrites.

Come clean Nvidia

NVidia has only themselves to blame for loss of market share. Not too long ago they were the undisputed graphics leaders. What happened?

Did NVidia tell the FTC about their lack of forthcoming on their fabbig issues?

Did NV talk about their continuing marketing and product blunders?

So Intel - and AMD - step into the massive hole NVidia left and NV has the cheek to complain about Intel? Seriously?

But Intel will probably pay NV a B or two just to get them off their back.

Hey - Intel has kept me out of the chip market and has prevented me from becoming an X86 powerhouse. I will settle out of court for $500M US.

Would be really nice if FTC discovers how much of a fanboy you are. Renaming hurts consumers ya but most companies do it. This is the type of useless crap on the internet.

Nvidia: the way you're meant to be played

Would be really nice if FTC discovers how much Nvidia's renaming lunacy hurts consumers.

Chimpzilla = AMD
Green Goblin = Nvidia (green logo)
manufacturer of expensive printer ink = HP
The Vole/Redmond giant = Microsoft

*sigh*

it'd make me laugh if the FTC finds out what a spoilt brat Nvidia has been acting like the last few years and cans the whole thing.
that said, Intel need a bit of a smack now and again to keep it in line.

just wondering how long till intel ponders making their processors/chipsets lock out nvidia hardware.

Dugh!!

David,

You need to visit this site more often to understand.
If you are a Yank, get a passport, come to Blighty, and all would be revealed.

If you're a pom, you'd know anyway.

There will probably be a poor soul who feels the need to explain this to you.

Mystery Component Manufacturers

Ok, I admit I'm not a professional geek or computer nerd but my involvement in computers stretches back to IBM System 360 and I am trying my best to keep abreast of developments that are going on in the industry. My problem arises when reading articles which i fully understand that mention names like, Microsoft, Intel, Nvidia, AMD, Google or Apple etc. but then start talking about other players in the fiels like Chipzilla, Green Goblin, The Vole and so on. Despite numerous attempts to track down these companies even on Google I cannot seem to track down their websites to learn more about them and why they seem so heavily involved in the goings on of the more recognized companies. I ask you what the hell has it got to do with them what the established companies are up to. Maybe if I knew more about what they do it might make more sense. But my advice to them is Butt out until you're at least big enough to have your own website!!

Go FTC

Way to go FTC, as much as I like intel chips someone has to teach them that breaking the law is infact illegal, did anyone at intel actually take any ethics classes in college?
