MOBILE PHONE MAKER Nokia has said that it will only put Linux under the bonnet of one new smartphone next year.
Reuters, after speaking with a source who claimed to have intimate knowledge of Nokia's product roadmap, reported that Maemo will not make as much of splash next year as many had thought.
The Linux Maemo operating system has been seen as key in Nokia's battle against countless other smartphones including the fruit-themed gadget that appears to get most of the press attention. Many analysts are expecting the world to be awash with Linux based smartphones in 2010.
Nokia started selling its first Linux phone, the top-of-the-range model N900, this month, and there has been talk about it showing Symbian the door.
Nokia said that it remained firmly committed to Symbian as its smartphone platform of choice. At least for 2010. µ
All to the good I'm sure!.
Many different phones leads to low production numbers and to high prices. Few phones or one phone will lead to higher production numbers, better quality and lower prices.
Being able to produce millions or more in single year will allow them to quickly drop prices.
no xenon flash, CutDown adobe flash 9.4 (not 10 or 10.1), low multitouch (see demo video) instead of more conventional pinch style to squeez, it has spiral finger movement and even that sucks. cpu is low 600MHz (see zoom in out demo for performance). quite fat. dont know whether they are also blocking p2p/voip on it like Android first versions. numpad is lenear, should be 3x3 rowXcol style. i guess samsung and htc will dominate smartphone space. desperate for HTC Shift 2 with Wimax and 5mp cam.
Well,
Maemo IS key in Nokia's battle
against countless other smartphones and it is key key for Nokia's survival. Unless they want to go the Siemens Mobile way.
Maemo is the only way to have an really good Nokia branded operating system and at the same time avoid Android and Windows Mobile as much as possible.
As a matter of fact,
Maemo is a silver bullet for Nokia,
and its they only one they ever will have
and if they are stupid enough not to recognize that
than they deserve to get annihilated by the mercyless forces of the market.
Nokia needs to have to have a sexy product that is on par with the iPhone as much as it is possible.
If they fail in this field, they will fail elsewhere as well and their brand value will get depleted.
Symbian?
Ja, ok, for low cost, no frills phone this is fine with me.
For a smartphone? Oh my god, how stupid could I be! Do you want to insult me?
No bloddy way another Symbian phone finds a way into my home.
Nokia should just switch to Android. It's the only viable smartphone competitor to the IPhone. Of course, they won't do this because they paid a dump truck of cash for Symbian.
Sure, there'll be one release of hardware per year (according to the article), but how often will they update the software?
