NO ONE WANTS THEM, they are not compulsory, most people didn't even know you could get them and they cost thirty quid. Welcome the rollout of UK National Identity cards in Manchester.
UK Home Secretary Alan Johnson made the announcement that cards were available this morning, declaring, "The many benefits of the National Identity Card can now be enjoyed by members of the public in Manchester. The first applicants will soon be taking advantage of the voluntary card as a means to prove and protect their identity in a quick, simple and secure way."
Johnson explained that the card could be used as a proof of age or instead of a passport when travelling across Europe.
Keen to push the 'par-tay' line, Identity Minister Meg Hillier, added, "With research by the Identity and Passport Service showing that nearly ten per cent of passports are lost by young people on nights out and tough legislation introduced this month to clamp down on underage drinking, it will be more important than ever for young people to have access to a universally accepted proof of age."
If you live in Manchester, keep getting so drunk that you regularly lose personal possessions, or simply keep getting refused a drink while waiting for a ferry to France, then the National Identity Card costs £30 compared with £77.50 for a passport. It contains your photo image, fingerprint, biometrics and, some say, captures your very soul.
Individuals can get more information or make an appointment for an identity card by calling 0300 330 0000 and leaving a message after the beep. µ
"Manchester ID cards tip up
As if you want one"
Unfortunatly I do not live in Manchester so I am going to have to wait. I don't know why they can't roll them out faster.
What´s the problem UK folk, every Country in the EU has alredy an ID card! So why don´t you do the same! Its an excelent tracking device for the autorities!!! :=) Don´t be affraid to give your fingertipp, look at the Amies they will take eveyting when you enter their country!!! So whats the problem with you folks!!!
seriously... why is this card needed?
I'd love one. My first form of photo ID was my passport at age 23. Cheaper and handier than a Passport.
Whats not to like?
Just another step to an authoritarian police state...
the problems are
(1) It won't stop any of the crimes that they say it will
(2) the UK gov want you to provide personal data which is not required under the EU rules
(3) biometric data (currently fingerprints) is collected and stored in searchable electronic format (the French for example only store these on paper, and require permission from a Judge in order to access them)
(4) once enrolled you are LEGALLY required to update the authorities of any changes (like moving house). There's a £2000 fine if you forget to tell them.
(5) the UK gov have a lousy record for data security, and indeed selling personal data to all and sundry.
(6) it doesn't do anything that you can't do with a passport, driving licence or a number of other documents.
(7) they demand that you visit them personally to prove you are who you say you are, and then want £30 for the privilege
(8) It will cost the country billions of pounds to implement and roll out, which could be better spent on other things.
What dumbass, has got 30 quid spare for a bit of tacky card?
What these dumbasses don't realise is,this is one of Gordo Brown's 'get rich quick' schemes, for 'Big Business'.
Business prints out a useless piece of cardboard, you pay them £30 & the government, then puts you on their database,at YOUR expense, thereby killing one bird, with two stones..that is your freedom & relieving you of your money, hence, the reason that, those who buy them, are called, dumbasses, lol.
What I don't understand is...why not just get a driving license? A provisional even?
I don't know anyone who takes their passport as proof of age for a night out anymore.
who take their British Passport with them on a night out in the UK?
My Passport stays in a drawer at home, I only take it out when going abroad - have I not been getting full value from my £77.50 Passport all these years by not flashing it around in drinking establishments in my home country???
I'm just waiting until the first faked ID card tips up which should be the final nail in the coffin for this ridiculous scheme. Hopefully the details on the faked card will be Alan Johnson's, or Gordons.
its a police state!
...curfews are next
then sterilisation then remote controlled taser neckbands
If "nearly ten per cent of passports are lost by young people on nights out", does that mean we can expect to see large numbers of these ID cards lost and recycled in some way? And why is it better to lose an ID card rather than a passport, is it not as useful a document?
This article wanted to make me vomit - it's so patently false and full of lies:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8361943.stm
"People often take their passports to prove their identity, going to nightclubs and bars and the Passport Service sweeps these up every week."
a) People don't take British passports to UK bars
b) I doubt the Passport Service has any such capability to "sweep" up lost passports - that would suggest a level of competence far beyond the norm
"I've got one. It's very convenient."
Hurl.
The question I wish to Know is why does a passport cost £47.50 more if it contains no more extra info, yes it has paper and few more pages but not £47.50 worth.
Not sure I need an ID card but if cheaper than passport I'd consider it, but only if they stop sharing info stored with anyone who says please can I have your data.
These stupid agreements with Yanks annoy me, we give them data they give us nothing in return, just take the banking swift agreements.
Ditch the wasting of cash.

Youv'e been pawned by New Labour & it's organ of propaganda-the BBC.
Get a life man!...there's freedom from political & religious dogma,if you want it?
It's liberating,it's like fresh air,you can think outside of the box..it's FREEDOM OF THOUGHT.
It appears your post is free of any thought whatsoever.
People do take passports to clubs. My GF is one of them, as her driving license is soo old (and probably out of date) it has no photo. Quite a few other people I know do the same.
I'm still against id cards tho.
If your GF has a driving licence without photo, but still needs a passport to get into clubs, she must have looked after herself very well.
I agree people use them though to get into clubs, my daughter was knocked back from a few using her student ID, so now uses her passport.
I'm still against ID cards tho.
Wouldn't it be easier for your GF to get an updated licence rather than risk losing a valuable document like a passport? I've still never met anyone who takes their passport to a club or bar, but concede your girlfriend obviously does (although doesn't need to).
However the government state that 10% of passports are lost by people using them as identification for clubs which would suggest that a fairly significant number of people are using them on a night out, a figure which simply doesn't reflect what I see when I go to clubs (on a regular basis) as there are better/cheaper/less risky alternatives to prove age/identity (and obviously I don't mean these shameful ID Cards!)
And of course people will still need passports, unless they intend to travel only as far as Europe.
The above fanboi Adam Bates works for the Home Office
No wonder he posted a message of support for this crackpot nazi idea
