US Senators are concerned about secret treaty

What do you want us to sign?
Wed Nov 25 2009, 12:21

POLITICIANS in the former British colony of Virginia are starting to wake up to the fact that its government is about to sign a secret treaty called the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) that will give sweeping powers to the movie and music businesses to lock up filesharers.

Two US senators are not happy about allowing the government to sign such a treaty, which is so secret that hardly anyone knows about it and the entertainment cartels have the right to send death squads around to the houses of people who are in the know but shouldn't be [you made the last bit up didn't you? Ed].

Despite the fact that the record companies and movie studios have been telling senators that secret treaties are normal, some are not buying it and are wondering why the White House is going along with the idea.

Senators Bernie Sanders and Sherrod Brown have sent a firmly worded letter to US Trade Representative Ron Kirk asking that the proposed provisions of the ACTA treaty be made public.

The letter points out that "the public has a right to monitor and express informed views on proposals of such magnitude."

The US government claims that the ACTA treaty has to be kept secret for reasons of, er, national security.

As it is the terms of the treaty are being shared with all countries in the negotiations and with dozens of representatives of large corporations but kept secret from the public.

Sanders and Brown are concerned that the secrecy reflects a desire to avoid potential criticism by the great unwashed who will be most affected by it after it's signed and placed into effect.

In Blighty we are keeping it secret too. µ

international means not just Obama

It's a treaty between "democratic" countries right?
"Democratic", in non-US linguo, means that we're supposed to know what they do in our name right? So we can vote them out in all fairness if we don't like what they decide for us?

Going back to my cave now... One day the non-French masses will remember that they can oppose their government, or at least demonstrate in the streets

Can the Obama nuts please leave the building

The treaty was started in 2006/2007 by the US & EU. Who was in power then? Bush. Please get some perspective and facts.

Living within Spinning Lies Creates Easily Pricked Bubbles

"In Blighty we are keeping it secret too." Well, they're doing their best, but with IT Control lost to Evolutionary Forces, is it a Lost Battle already.

Which might be something else sheltering in the dark shadows of silence and/or spinning denial, servering deceit and self-defeat.

OBAMA IS WEAK, AND THE WHITE FOLK HAVE A ROPE AROUND HIS NECK.

But then obama has his hands tied behind his back. And the big decisions are made by his so-called advisers or otherwise the white people up top (this is in response to all the people making race an issue). What does it matter, who's in charge and the so-called commander if someone else makes the big choices?

Think about it. I see him begging off for the stimulus cash that he wanted and had to eat his words about the jews building settlements... the man really has no power or people are twisting his arm from up top.

He is trying to please everyone, everywhere. He is trying to please the gays with the same-sex marrage/partnership, steam cell research, climate change and the Palestinian/Jewish issues.

Bush was by far a stronger character, and vetoed many things and bought lots of controversial laws and so on, and no one said a thing. Obama seems a little afraid of maybe being kicked out before his term or even being shot like Kennedy or maybe just don't want to leave a legacy as the first black president but the worst president ever.

That would be a shame, but in trying to please people and everything he is failing and is very weak because he is afraid of criticism.

Just you wait and monitor his performance, you Americans will notice, unless you're too dunce to notice how your obama changes the world... bolliks... some messiah.

You can't make peace by having more war. Imagine kicking someone in the face and then trying to befriend them. That guy will one time try and stub you on the bulls... Unless you happen to be a Christian in which case you were meant to offer the other cheek!

bye. Jon.

things will have to change

if this treaty does go into effect it wont be long before we all are using encryption in bit torrents. i know its around today but most people still dont need it so its not as popular. if this treaty passes i guarantee the isp's will be up in arms. they complain that bit torrents eat up too much of their bandwidth. can you what encrypted bit torrents will do to their bandwidth? as much as isp's hate how pirates use so much of their bandwidth it is also those pirates who buy their top tier broadband packages. i dont know if isps realize but without pirates they will lose quite a bit of money.

About Obama

I didn't vote for Obama, and I tend to vote for Republicans, but I have to say...

Obama does not have god-like powers. Even if he were 100% committed to transparency in the American government, that doesn't prevent other people from keeping secrets from him or the American people.

That being said, I've heard the rumors(rumors to me, they may have been verified) about the vice president and his connection to big media.

Transparency you can believe in?

Remember the promises about Obama having the most transparent administration?

Change we can believe in... large spending bills released less than 36hours before voting so pork spending can be effectively hidden. Health care bill over several thousand pages long that are not known and understood by the people voting on (and a 100mil provision for the state of LA, solely to ensure 1 of 2 democrats potentially opposed to the bill, from the state of LA, does not vote against it)

And now this - payback for all the campaigning and support for the American Idol presidential run and backing by the entertainment industry. Heck one of his support funds has already sent out a request for donations to run ads against Palin (I know because I got one!). They are already running for 2012 less than 1 year into office... (shakes head)

Change we can believe in? This is what happens when you give EITHER of the 2 political parties too much power. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Obama is going to take control of the internet

"Details of a revamped version of the Cybersecurity Act of 2009 show the Senate bill could give the president a "kill switch" on the Internet and allow him to shut out private networks from online access. "

Secret treaties are the new way of doing things with the current administration. You trust Obama, don't you?

Yeah, but if the Senate goes along....

typical "progressive" trick. Keep it secret, because if the unwashed masses find out, they might get angry and take it out on us.

Damn straight, the terms of this 'treaty' need to be made public. Something is definitely fishy, and it ain't the food.

Just another reason to fire all these 'progressive' stalinistas.

Say it ain't so!

No. Never. Cannot be. Impossible. I don't believe it. Obama promised us the most open and transparent presidency in history. It can't be true. Obama wouldn't lie. Are you calling Obama a liar? Obama PROMISED!!! Those Senators must be racists...

Constitution and treaties

Good luck on making the treaty enforceable law and keeping it secret. The U.S. Constitution (Article 2, Section 2) states that the President "... shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur ...".

In Canada we have the same secret.

Canadian gov't is keeping it from us as well, a very greasy way to go about this.
I suggest you check out Michael Geist's Blog http://www.michaelgeist.ca/ he seems to be very informed on this subject.
