Intel wants to stick chips in your brain

By 2020
Friday, 20 November 2009, 10:30

BY 2020 we will all have chips inside our brains and not need a mouse or keyboard to control our computers, according to Intel.

Chipzilla has been telling hacks that it is finding ways ways to read and harness human brain waves so they can be used to operate computers, television sets and cell phones.

Lucky volunteers will be queuing up to have the test chips wired into their brains so that they can control their computers with a thought.

The bloke behind the idea is Dean Pomerleau, who works for Intel on matters of cognitive neuroscience, machine learning, computer vision, robotics, man-machine interfaces, brain processing of semantic information, and various brain-scanning technologies, such as fMRI, MEG, EEG and ECoG. He and his associates at Chipzilla are solving the mechanisms of brain waves.

He thinks that people may be willing to be more committed to brain implants. "Imagine being able to surf the web with the power of your thoughts."

But then there is the worry that the government could access the chip and read your mind.

And there is also the problem that you will not be able to get your computer to work until you have had your second cup of coffee.

There's more here. µ

morons...

why do people consider this sort of thing to be an attractive prospect?

is it not blatantly obvious that this technology can be used maliciously to control people and restrict their freedom?

would you trust a government to use it responsibly? i know i couldnt!

A chip in your brain, a stick in your... uhm!

And then, as soon as you wake up, you'll find your (PR0N) dreams have been posted up on youtube, or on you-boob....
You think "nice boobs, blondie" and your thought is posted on facebook or squitter....

@massive jawjut

you won't be able to control people because your mind will be accessed as read-only.

@Scott: haha

The president's anaylst:

only it was TPC (the phone company) behind it.

this won't be cheap

so don't worry.
though it could redefine the meaning of a virus infection for the fools that paid the medical procedure to get the silicone implanted

Super Galactic Intelligence?

Reminds me of an Aqua Teen Hunger Force episode ("Super Computer"):

"You want entertainment? Just try to imagine a world where emails are sent by your brain before they are written and are read before they arrive by people you've never even met in countries you've never even heard of..."

I'll be in the Privy, Luvy_

Cribbing from the walls and arse me nothing nuttier than the port-a-potty loo bogs at the Hackney Wickied Peanutter's Fete?

I've no more mind for no more brains, as now I'm already got the
Denial-Of-Service attacks, queuing, due to the onset of early excess of when the chips are down, and that comes from a hot head place by the short and Curly Wurly Squirlies.

editorial comment

Nick,
Would've been amusing to parenthetically say the following:
"The bloke behind the idea is Dean Pomerleau, who works for Intel on (grey) matters of cognitive neuroscience,..."

security & privacy.

I think privacy and security are a bit of an illusion now. This is not really going to make things any worse.

I see this gradually developing to replace video and audio as well as keyboard and mouse. When it can do that, better than what we have now, for less than 100 quid, and I don't need a surgical procedure - I'm all for it.

Prohibited Action Warning!

Didn't Intel invent DRM as well as the scheme to encrypt and copy protect the HDMI interface?

So see what happens when you try to start your favorite DVD/CD ripper program with your mind control chip.

upgrades

What about upgrades? obviously every six months your implant will need upgrading to the latest version. Does this mean brain surgery every 6 months?

What no GITS viewers....

"Ghost in the Shell" (Japanese anime; cartoons but not for Kids) covered just about every high and low this technology could provide over its 2 movies, 2 TV seasons plus a TV movie/feature.

Highs like why access a 'PC' when your brain can directly connect to the internet/mobile networks and displaying the information directly on your optic/auditory nerves.

Lows like allowing brain hacking for reading/replacing someones memories. The later thereby changing their personality/perceptions to make them do your bidding.

PS: Hollywood is in the process of making a "Live Action" version. If you have a functioning brain I recommend trying to originals.
