THE MOST INFLUENTIAL Internet moments of the decade have been decided on by the Webby Awards committee.
These events have 'shaped the world', according to the committee, and included such landmark moments as the birth of Wikipedia, the demise of Napster and the launch of the Iphone.
The Top 10 chronological listing was released by New York's International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences' Webby Awards, which annually honours people for their work online.
The 2008 US presidential election and the Iranian elections this year were noted for the impact of online activity and support, especially on websites such as Youtube, Twitter and Facebook.
And if you were wondering which year was the most important of the decade, it was of course judged to be 2006, with Youtube and Twitter both launching and Facebook being opened to the public that year.
The Webby Awards list of the 10 most influential Internet moments of the decade:
- Craigslist online classified site expands outside San Francisco (2000)
- The launch of Google AdWords (2000)
- The launch of online encyclopedia Wikipedia (2001)
- The shutdown of file-sharing site Napster (2001)
- Google's initial public offering (2004)
- The online video revolution led by Youtube (2006)
- Facebook opens to non-college students and Twitter launches (2006)
- Apple's Iphone debuts (2007)
- The use of the Internet in the US presidential campaign (2008)
- The use of Twitter during the Iranian election protests (2009).
So there you have it. µ
Online moments, huh? Exactly how is the Apple Iphone an Online moment? lol
Also, the Iphone was not the first phone to offer internet browsing so don't know why that's even there. Whatever.
What about all the new Internet browsers that changed Online browsing totally, like the launch of Firefox? There are also many thing's left out here. I think the internet was used very much in the 2004 and 2006 elections too, IMO.
Obviously, not a lot of effort put into this. I'll pass...
When did "all your base are belong to us" come out? Wasn't it in 2000?
If Googles IPO counts, surely the emergence of Facebook/Social Network has got to be included? More people are on that then have an iPhone...
Whatever you think of this list, just be thankful that this wasn't another lame link to the INQ's sister site V3 and their vacuous top 10 lists.
Jasus, we go through this every ten years ...
The decade has another year to run. It will end at midnight 31 December 2010. To pretend otherwise is like running a ten-mile race and calling it done as you begin the tenth mile.
Who would have thought a very US-centric list would come out of a New York based organisation.
A decade is 10 years. 2000-2009 is 10 years. How exactly is that too soon? Failure to count much?
Whereas the 21st century began on 1st Jan 2001, the decade referred to here clearly began in 1st Jan 2000. Stay in school buddy.
On another note, this list is very much biased and uninformed.
I can think of 5 things in here that deserve no mention and another 15 (i can think of this moment) that do.
my 1st critique...
and btw .. 21st C starts on 1st Jan 00 .. not 01.
@I Know
No you don't know... easy mode way of putting it is "when did the 1st century started?" and go from there.
So lets not go back to Y2K/21st century discussions again.
and everyone else on the planet wants to be like them (yes, thinking Americans here)?
This list is valid for about 2% of the world's population......
Wow YouTube has been around only since 2006? Wikipedia was defiantly HUGE... Wow I was online for most of that... WHOOO FOR BEING A DORK!!!
