Apple's Tablet gets postponed

Still vapourware
Thursday, 19 November 2009, 10:45

THE SECOND COMING of Apple's Newton tablet, which has been hyped more than the return of Christ, is now looking equally delayed.

After churning out rumours about how wonderful the tablet is going to be, the rumour mill is now telling the world that Apple might not be ready to expose the tablet to reality yet.

Apple apparently planned a March launch of the Newton II and was spending its time trying to fill the media with claims it was not just a big Iphone or a PDA in drag.

Now it appears it is still vapourware with plans to postpone the launch of the tablet to somewhere in the second half of 2010. This will probably coincide with the software launch of Duke Nukem Returns which we guess will be the first game that will run on the machine.

The reason for the delay is that Apple has decided to change some of the components and plans to launch a model using an OLED panel from LG Display.

Foxconn, Quanta Computer and Pegatron Technology are expected to be manufacturing partners for both of Apple's two tablet PC models. One tablet will have a 10.6-inch TFT LCD panel while the other will have a 9.7-inch OLED panel.

However the news might be bad for those who think that Apple's tablet will be flogged for $800.

The 9.7-inch OLED panels are priced at about $500 and panel costs normally account for about 30 per cent of a device's total cost.

This means that Apple's 9.7-inch OLED tablet PC might be priced at about $1,500 or higher. Other sources think that the price will drop to as little as $1,200 by the second half of 2010 or that the retail price could reach as high as $2,000.

In other words, no one has a clue as to how much these things will actually cost, if they ever do appear.

Some people think that the only way Apple will get a tablet into the shops is if its mates in the telecoms industry subsidise it enough.

Cynics claim that Apple is delaying the release of the tablet until OLED panel prices drop far enough. That means that the tablet might have to wait until 2011 when it is expected that the technology might be available at acceptable prices. µ

Rumours!?!

So, it seems that the much rubbished rumours of a Jobby Slate (IsLate) is true!

The fan boys will love an OLED on a Jobby, whatever the cost (money in the bank for Apple). We can see that the Slate (Tablets have an integral keyboard) will become the next big gadget thingy. The Vole are preparing their Courier (they missed the boat with smartphones), and other slates are beginning to appear from manufactures.

The question to ask is when Slates are reborn through the great fruit, will both Smartphone and netbook sales be reduced. I suspect that netbooks will be replaced by the Slate with an integration of the netbook and Smartphone functions! The only redeeming factor for the smatphone will be its pocket carry capacity.

Thanks, Nick!

Thanks for giving us the straight scoop on this! With most media outlets and writers being bribed with electronic devices it's nice there is still an honest voice out there.

The real reason

The real reason is because Steve Jobs has not yet ascended the Mount of Sinai and received the tablet from a burning bush--or so some would believe.

Long live the two-bit tabloid wannabe...

He's like Rush Limbaugh, you don't have to agree with him to enjoy his schtick. (sp?)

I'm afraid you are mistaken

"THE SECOND COMING of Apple's Newton tablet, which has been hyped more than the return of Christ, is now looking equally delayed."

Hey Nick, guess what? The Second Coming of Christ is right on schedule. There is no delay. I normally enjoy your pokes at stuff because it usually has at least some foundation for the joke. This lacks such a qualifier.

Why postpone?

Stevie should release this puppy ASAP as Apple Fanboys will pay whatever price for it. $1200 or $12,000 makes no difference....

@BB

ROTFL!!!

Finally something funny among the piles of hate from the MacFanbois!

Gee! From the comments you would think the only people reading the Inq are Apple/nVidia fanbois. Why can't they go puke somewhere else?

Apple worried about Nokia's N900

Why bother developing an Internet tablet when you have the iPhone UNLESS you are worried that something like Nokia's N900 is going to steal a march on you!

I think that N900 might well be a bit of a game changer. It will (hopefully) give people a proper computer like experience from a phone sized device.

That means you can access all sorts of web based services without having to buy and install apps.

Less limitations, more flexibility, and a PC-like experience. Sounds pretty good (if it works).

Even dumber than usual

Another frigtarded Apple column from Nick (disclaimer - I do not and never have owned a Mac), but this one sets the bar of stupid even lower.

Take this passage:

/i "The 9.7-inch OLED panels are priced at about $500 and panel costs normally account for about 30 per cent of a device's total cost.

This means that Apple's 9.7-inch OLED tablet PC might be priced at about $1,500 or higher. Other sources think that the price will drop to as little as $1,200 by the second half of 2010 or that the retail price could reach as high as $2,000." /i

The 30%-of-cost panel figure is derived either mostly or entirely from LCD-based devices. Just because a different panel technology is used doesn't mean the cost of the other components magically increase to match. CPUs don't mystically increase in price just to match the panel, nor do the casing materials, etc. If it's a premium product then they might decide on various higher-spec and more expensive bits, but the relationship is not strictly causal.

The problem with the column is even a retarded monkey on crack would figure this out instantly and instinctively without effort. Not sure where this put's Nicky on the IQ-o-meter, but it's probably somewhere between Megan Fox and an eggplant.
