MSI adds notebook to netbook range

Intel CULV gets Wind
Wednesday, 18 November 2009, 18:09

PC MAKER MSI has unveiled the latest addition to its range of Wind notebooks, dubbed the U200.

msiu200With the Wind brand previously being used on MSI's netbooks and the ultra-low voltage processors reserved for it thin X-series notebooks, the Wind 12 U200 seems to sit somewhere between a netbook and an ultraportable.

Weighing in at 1.5kgs and sporting a 12.1-inch 16:9 display, it's not the smallest or lightest device around.

Under the hood you'll find an Intel CULV SU3500 1.4GHz processor, 2GB of DDR2 memory, a 320GB hard drive and Intel's GMA 4500 MHD video card. It's all powered by a six cell battery that MSI reckons will give you six and a half hours of battery life.

As well as 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth and Gigabit LAN connectivity, you also get three USB ports, a card reader, VGA and HDMI output and a 1.3MP webcam.

The Wind U200 is being done in black and white and should be landing on shelves before the end of the month with a list price of £399. µ

Intel GMA?

Do not want. Gimme an ATI or Nvida chip. Something other than an Intel GMA chip. Preferably with dedicated memory.

Intel culv gets Wind... or rather...

Intel CULV breaks wind, 'cause its video chip is a real FART!

GMA500

Battery life suffers when you put in fancy graphics. With a GMA4500HD you can still watch HD stuff and keep the power around 10-15W.

This is the reason you don't see much ION stuff, because despite all the hype it's just not very good.

A solo? bah

Give me a dual core or go home. If I wanted a single core I'd just go with an Atom

Yawn

I have to agree with thebrainspecialist.

CULV by itself is a good processor, but when you pair good with garbage (4500mhd), you get garbage.

Pair it up in a 12 inch with a real GPU and it will be noteworthy. Pair it up with junk Intel graphics, and the whole package is just more junk.

The demand for thin and lights has not been high. It isn't because people don't want thin and lights, it's because people won't buy them if they contain Intel garbage GPUs.
