Mediatek will produce an all-in-one GSM/GPRS chip

And one for all
Wed Nov 18 2009, 11:50

MEDIATEK will mass produce its first GSM/GPRS single chips MT6253 in December.

The chip is expected to find its way into handsets that are priced at under $440.

The technology is 40 per cent cheaper than running two chips side by side and this means that phone makers can drop the price of such phones.

Analysts told Digitimes that single-chip systems from MediaTek will be hot properties next year.

Shipments are expected to reach 10 million units in the first quarter of 2010 and 100 million for the year. µ

Nice however-

Unfortunately the carriers and 3rd party vendors will not drop prices it just means more profit to them and not passed on to the customers-endusers

Hear this before....but can it be done at a Profit?

Wait wasn't ADI going to produce a similar chip? Oh I remember MTek bought that operation off ADI. As I recall ADI was never able to profitably run that business. There is a substantial (material) difference between the terms *will produce* and *are producing profitability at a 100MM run rate*.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
