THE UN has revealed itself to be in favour of censorship, at least when China is involved.
The United Nations sponsored an Internet Governance Forum in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. As part of the conference an anti-Internet censorship group was disrupted by a gang of UN officials who demanded removal of a poster that mentioned Internet firewalls in China.
At the heart of the UN's problems was a poster advertising "Access Controlled", a book being introduced at the event.
The poster was thrown on the floor and protesters were told to remove it because of the reference to China and Tibet. They refused, so security guards came and removed it.
All this happened in front of bemused witnesses. What angered the UN was a sentence that read, "The first generation of Internet controls consisted largely of building firewalls at key Internet gateways; China's famous 'Great Firewall of China' is one of the first national Internet filtering systems."
Ron Deibert, director of the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto's Munk Centre for International Studies said that it was bizarre that people were not allowed to discuss Internet censorship and surveillance policy at a forum about Internet governance.
Deibert has filed a complaint against the censorship of the event and sent it to the United Nations Human Rights Commission.
He said it was an undemocratic act to censor the event just because someone was trying to butter up the Chinese government.
The UN stance is a little odd because it has previously expressed concern over the human rights situation in Tibet and Eastern Turkestan. µ
This smells of Animal farm, and phrases like 'he who controls the past, controls the future'
As the UN is largely a vehicle for the US to tell everyone else what to do, but at the same time to pretend that it is "international" pressure being applied, I'm afraid you'll have to keep it in the US.
I can't think of anything useful they've done either.
Why would the UN care when they are not standing against the ACTA. ACTA is not just anti counter fitting its also a good way to start censorship.
The Chinese government wants global business, they want to be more powerful, and they want more influence, yet they block their own people from free trade of thoughts and ideas.
I know it's not all-inclusive but the censorship of media is hidden from a majority of the Chinese. I'm surprised the Olympics didn't have more of an impact in opening their eyes. Hopefully articles like this one can help in a small way.

Once again it comes down to "do as I say, not as I do." I am beginning to think that a good slogan for these guys might be "Tolerance for everyone! (except those we deem intolerant for disagreeing with us.)" Evidently, simply stating the facts can land you in the intolerant camp. Get rid of this useless blight on the rest of humanity. I have yet to read anything that would indicate to me that any real, lasting good has ever emerged from the UN. If that observation is accurate, and admittedly I am not privy to all of the pertinent information any more than the average citizen, the UN must either go or radically shape up. There isn't enough money to go around as it is without handing large chunks of it over to what appear to be do-nothing, self-important, non-productive members of our societies, and I don't mean welfare recipients, either.
But instead, I propose we move the UN to Somalia.
PLEASE Europeans!!!! Take the UN off our hands. This collection of idiots does nothing good for the world. Build a nice place for them across the pond so you can enjoy having them close to you. Don't forget to give them total diplomatic immunity so they can violate the host country's laws with impunity.
