Intel versus AMD will settle soon

Bankers say it is nothing really
Wed Nov 11 2009, 11:01

BANKERS, stuffed fat with wodges of taxpayer cash for stuffing up the economy, have started predicting how the spat between Intel and AMD will wind up.

A Barclays Capital analyst claims that, despite the fact that Intel is on the defensive over its alleged antitrust abuses against AMD, and is likely to face fines that could gut its bottom line, really all is well with Chipzilla.

Analyst Tim Luke believes that Intel and AMD will settle out of court soon, kiss and make up and live happily ever after.

He said that a potential settlement in the lengthy dispute between the two chipmakers will take place ahead of their March 29th 2010 court date in Delaware.

Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy refused to comment on analysts' reports or speculation and AMD spokesman Michael Silverman also said the company does not comment on analyst notes and that Luke's comments were "highly speculative."

Into that you could read that it is these sort of thoughts that lead bankers to invest shedloads of cash into mortgages on houses that are falling over, bought by people who don't have jobs.

However there are some elements that make sense. Luke said AMD might also reap benefits from putting an end to the legal tussles.

He said that a settlement "could prove a beneficial opportunity for AMD given the strained state of its balance sheet and its desire to renegotiate a new cross licensing deal with Intel and potentially divest its Global Foundries holding."

In short, if Intel agrees not to sue Global Foundries claiming it was not covered by a patent cross-licensing agreement between the two companies, and pays enough cash to sort out AMD's cash crisis, then the whole row could soon be over.

Luke thinks Intel, which "adamantly denies any wrongdoing" in its antitrust cases, might go for a settlement with AMD because that would end any legal uncertainties about these issues. µ

Much to do about Nothing.

Its funny how all the AMD lovers got this wrong. Thinking they were going to burn INTEL at the stake and all that. Sure Intel has agreed to pay like 1.4B, but its probably in payments over like a year or two. Seems like all AMD did was cry wolf and take everyone who was stupid enough to listen for a ride. AMD must have known this is what they were after all along. Just a quick payout to help there bottom at a time when there ship and tech is sinking faster then Enron stock. AMD really had no intention of taking it the distance in court because they were not going to see a red cent. All the money would ultimately go to the courts/gov in the best case senairo. This is probably the best thing AMD could have done to make some cash when they needed it most. Funny how intel keeps bailing out AMD every few years or so :) In the end Intel is still top dog and AMD will keep crying wolf whenever the need occurs...
thats MHO and im sticking to it :)..

AMD Fanbois are wankers...

I feel sorry for any journalist with the audacity to comment on anything AMD, for it brings out the AMD fanbois who think AMD can do no wrong.

If AMD had spent less money hiring lawyers and more money on hiring ENGINEERS, they might have been able to design something better than the Barfelogna and crippled three core Tripod processors. Instead, AMD sat on their hands for three years gloating while Intel designed and launched the Core 2 processor. Core 2 ended profits for AMD.

Then AMD sat on their hands for another year while Intel sold quad core processors. AMD whined about "native" quad cores while cheap Intel dual cores beat the snot out of the fastest AMD chips. The low end Q6600 was faster than every single chip from AMD all the way up until the day Intel stopped making them. We all know AMD is readying its own multi-chip module, but that's fine with AMD fanboys because its being done by AMD.

AMD fanboys are as useless as a 12 inch dong on the pope and whine more than a classroom of kindergarteners getting their cookies and milk taken away.

Settle? SETTLE?!

Such talk just shows some or all of the following:

- how far removed from reality the Anal-ists are, _or_

- how deep they're in Intel's pockets, _or_

- how anti-AMD they are.

No one in command of their senses could suggest AMD would be idiotic enough to settle with an organization that EVEN THOUGH FOUND GUILTY IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD, CONTINUES TO:
- Loudly proclaim they did nothing wrong.
- Engage in the exact same illegal practices.
- Hide these illegal practices.

So, let's see, Intel would pay AMD a chunk of money, swear to never do it again, (Hmm...not sure how that would work, since they swear they never did it in the first place) and then....

Go back to "business as usual" and do it some more.

BTW, anyone who doesn't believe this, read the $%^&* EU Court of First Instance findings, and the New York State statement of charges and supporting documentation.
Clearly, there is no wiggle room for Intel - They are guilty as hell.
The EU, and soon New York State will soon have their head on a pike, followed by AMD in their civil case, followed up by an AMD stockholder class action lawsuit.

Intel's behaviour is not only anti-competitive, it is as disgusting as it gets, with Dell being Intel's bit#h - effectively screwing AMD, the the AMD stockholder, the Tier 1 computer makers and the consumer.
All this to rake in that enormous bag of Intel bribe money.

It will be a cold day in hell before I buy an Intel CPU or a Dell box. Never again.

BULLDOZIER Taped OUT & Jens Demos NVIDIA CPU....

On Ultra Alpha side of World, Dark Side, Light Shone thru. first, OtheINQ Own Orphaned Charles Demerjerian HIT HOT Party & its here:

tidbits snuck out in the Q&A session at the AMD analyst day today. It seems that Fusion and the new cores have taped out and are at the fabs.

The new cores were said to begin sampling to OEMs in 2010. When pressed on the timing of tapeouts, one AMD spokesperson said that the fabs were 'running product now'. That means the chips have taped out and the fun is about to begin.

Next up was the process the Fusion cores will be on. The first of them will be made on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process, something that makes a lot of sense. It is much easier to port a GPU from bulk silicon to SOI than to do things the other way around.
Plus theres another Art in SA. Also, Florence IS back uP to Snuff, Reporting On & Pictureing Jens New Tablet run with Tegra. So Semi Offical, nVidia ?enters X86 CPU Programable market, Plays Windows CE.

Fusion Was Mikes Thing, As first report. Now Poor Mike IS More Confused Where Drivers License IS, Claiming No Such thing needed In U.K. Mike, Its Computers, Not Lost I.D, thats IMPORTANT. So when Mike goes into Slave Pen Again, Mike Be Next Gen Stories again. Ohhh, Mike. Pretty, Pretty Mike, Where Are You? breaking. NICK FARREL turning into Mike.????Come On Nick, Just Bit deeper....DEP'R. Ouuui, Lala.

Less DL, More Sped.

$7-9 billion cash

After having been through three major antitrust cases Marine Offshore construction, Wyoming Tight Sands and South Texas gas Gathering, in the 70's and 80's I have a rough idea how the trial would go. Figure damages at about $100million in sales annually and that is pretty conservative, prejudgment interest at $18%(6% trebled) and you wind up at $2.4 billion damages plus compounded interest at about $4.5 billion and that is Intel's cash exposure to AMD. Add the $1 billion plus to the EU and what ever DOJ wants and it looks like a bankruptcy for Intel unless they cut a deal. The only way I see to play this is to buy AMD and short Intel. If Intel wanted to appeal they would have to put up a cash bond to cover the judgment and the post judgment interest. You might buy some of AMD's debt at a pretty good discount right now. My question is whether or not Mr. Otellini and Mr. Barret will do time. Sections 1 and 2 of Title 15 became crimes with the Antitrust Improvements Act of 1982. http://www.justice.gov/atr/public/divisionmanual/chapter2.pdf Anyone thinking Intel has any leverage under these circumstances with the Global Foundry spin off should read the Antitrust Guidelines for Licensing Intellectual Property. Intel would be risking enhancement for retaliation and loss of Intellectual Property. Intel doesn't have any cards left to play in this hand.

No way

Not a chance in hell will AMD settle out of court for this. That analyst is full of crap. Not just full, overflowing and flooding the area around him. AMD isn't looking just for money, they are looking to have actions stopped. A settlement wouldn't accomplish that. Not only that by AMD has also adamantly affirmed that it has strong legal ground for the GoFlo licensing as it exists right now, and so there wouldn't be any need to renegotiate that.
Considering that they have won every single other battle in other countries they have done this in, why would they settle now? You never get as good of an outcome settling as you do winning and being proven right.

That analyst is a joke.

Wishful Thinking

Intel has everything to lose and AMD has so much to win in this case that it would be nonsensical for them to settle with Intel. Even if they do consider that option, nothing could stop Intel from doing the same thing all over again. It seems that this company (Intel) has this bad habit and they can't get rid of it.

A settlement is fine

An out of court settlement is fine if Intel is willing to fork out a minimum of $500 Billion to AMD.

Why would AMD settle out of court?

They've been incredibly vocal and outspoken about the whole ordeal.

They want the whole world to know and want to rub it in Intel's face.

Karmic payback?

Intel basically put AMD into this situation, Intel should be the one to reset the equation back to zero.

Problem solved, and we'll see what happens in the next 5-10 years.

i'll have..

some of whatever this guys been taking! The whole world knows Intel is guilty as sin, the evidence against them is huge, they've lost many cases already on these matters all thats left is for an agreement to be made on how much they have to pay out.
