DDR3 prices to overtake DDR2

Any week now they say
Wed Nov 11 2009, 10:35

TAIWAN'S ANALYSTS, readers of entrails and the flights of flocks of birds, are predicting that DDR3 prices will overtake DDR2 prices any day now.

DRAMexchange soothsayers claim that with PC OEMs pushing the migration to DDR3, the next mainstream memory chip will soon be traded above the ASP for DDR2 chips in both spot and contract markets.

Contract prices for mainstream 2GB modules have soared into the heavens and have touched the very throne of heaven. A wolf was heard howling outside the head office of TSMC and prices have surged more than expected during the first half of November amid strong demand in the PC market.

DRAMexchange said that spot market quotes for 1Gb DDR3 have risen to $3, while branded and tested 1Gb DDR2 chips are in the $2.60 to 2.80 range.

PC makers have been demanding more DDR3 since the launch of Windows 7, which surprised the hell out of market observers who had expected DRAM demand to weaken after Microsoft launched its new operating system. We guess they hadn't sorted their yarrow stalks long enough, or something.

Contract quotes for 2GB DDR2 and 2GB DDR3 modules have risen 19-21 per cent and 13-18 per cent, respectively, with average prices of $41 and $39 for the first half of November.

The average price of 1Gb DDR2 chips edged up by 15.5 per cent to $2.38, remaining above 1Gb DDR3 at $2.25.

Now much depends on the tea-leaves as to whether DRAMexchange's predictions come true. The shape which could be either a beggar or a self-employed Samurai warrior could mean anything. µ

Prices have skyrocketed

Eversince the launch of both lynnfield and windows 7 ddr3 prices have skyrocketed. It is frustrating to see what they charge you for 4gb of 1333mhz memory these days. roughly set you back €110 right now while it used to be priced around €60-70. it is most absurt what 6gb of ddr3 1600mhz OCZ memory costs right now. used to be 90 euro now it is roughly €200 just pathetic. totaly taking away the price advantage a lynnfield build system should have compared to a i7 920 system.
those high-prices make it impossible to build a good buget system because saving on for example the cpu isnt worth it anymore because the memory costs more then the cpu. same for the bad radeon 5850 availability. those cards will set you back €350 at the shops who actualy have it in stock. those who dont have it in stock will set you back 250 euro letting you wait half a year. so crap to them. those damn companies have to meet demand not save on production because they think they wont sell anything. marketing anyalists are idiots i think it is because of them we have had a global recession they scare us with there lies about a failing economy. We are better off without them because there intention is to scare people so they sell off shares so there masters can buy them very cheaply
lets hope production will improve once again and that prices will drop afther new year.

OF COURSE TSMC MAKES MEM

hi density embedded and more. you are SO wrong and with the added stupidity to flame the inq.

We are all dumber for having read your drivel and may God have mercy on your soul.

Inq is sinking

Inq. Inq. Where did you go?

Writing that TSMC makes memory is as true as saying Obama is a white guy.

TSMC is a fab. They make GPU's, IPcores and so forth. They have NO interest in memory which is mainly controlled by Samsung/Hynix to name some :)

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
