AMD can't get enough GPUs

PC sales could be slowed
Mon Nov 09 2009, 12:28

PC MANUFACTURERS are starting to get worried that they cannot get enough of AMD's new 40nm GPUs.

The problem is due to AMD's foundry having trouble ramping up production of a new 40nm process, and it means that some PC makers are having to delay shipments of desktop and laptop computers.

It seems that the difficulty is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). It can't make enough of AMD's 5800 series 40nm GPUs. The foundry is running flat out but yields apparently are still below expectation.

Matt Davis, a spokesman for AMD, told Computerworld that the design of the chips was sound. It was all just a matter of trying to get TSMC to a point where they can yield.

"They're feeling the manufacturing crunch," said Davis. "We're a little bitter under yield but we're working back into a manufacturing schedule we want for these parts. TSMC can only kick them out so fast at this point."

We think he actually meant to say, "a little bit" and hope Chimpzilla's not really bitter about it. AMD said that it hopes to have production up to speed by year's end.

If it was a product that no one wanted then there would be no problem but demand for the chips is higher than expected. The company's HD5800 series GPUs have the industry performance lead at the moment.

AMD has a little time to get manufacturing in line before PC vendors start looking for greener pastures. AMD's rival Nvidia also uses TSMC and is also reporting trouble with 40nm parts yields. µ

@Leslie

Bye, have a nice trip. Too bad INQ is losing such a vested reader! ;(
I'm sure your contributions will be missed.

Typical AMD bash by INQ

Nick, you cease to amaze me mate. So they are "worried" they might not be able to get 40nm GPUs - lol, are you serious?

So the INQ is going to start reporting on the "worries" of ppl now and not about actual facts?

If this is how the INQ is going to report, then you will be losing a long term reader of the INQ (as in someone who has been reading the INQ from the beginning).

It is a bloody shame that the INQ has stooped to this level of reporting, honestly, it is no wonder Mike left.

Off to IT Examiner I go.

40nm on Chartered-Global Foundries?

Drashek,

That will be great if they put the loading here in Singapore. The question is FAB7 ready for 40 nM technology?

What does "flat out" mean?

"The foundry is running flat out but yields apparently are still below expectation."

Do they run 24 hours a day. If not they should hire some more people to speed things up.

Peanuts to foundries

While it's all about leading edge tech in CPU land, foundries are about trailing technology. Very little revenue is made on leading edge tech (check TSMC's last earnings and see how much 40nm comprised of that).

While it is important to scale - most customers are still on 90nm and 65nm designs and it's not worth the cost to migrate to 40/45nm with small volumes, yet alone 28/32nm. If you have higher volume parts like graphics maybe, but the press (and this site), puts way too much emphasis on leading edge foundry work, because they are used to covering Intel (and previously AMD when they had fabs) and don't know any better.

While this gets the press and I'm sure TSMC is worried about losing AMD as a customer long term - that's an inevitability anyway so look for them to focus on keeping Nvidia happy first and AMD second.

Hmmm

This is where the consumer gets hurt....I'm willing to bet we will be getting faulty GPS's and perhaps worst case, recalls.....Quality will suffer!

ChumpZilla NO More....

Glo.Flo Has Chartered By Nags & Squirm IS Starting Pain Process of Letting Go. Letting GO of 65 nm Process to Gloies Shores by 2013.

TSMC IS Raking Newbies in small nm scale with Crap(or IS It?) When chip sells out fast, DATS good. Ready for next GEn already , AS Profits Are Hooked to Print & Sell Lot.Once, as theres NO Need for Two. Slow Sellers Are BAD Product.

AMD/ATI Are NO Longer Chimps, Going further than Chartered ever Hoped, Now OLD Malicious World of Survielence IS Breaking apart. you Just Might Live to SEE Better Day.

In Comparrison of Theo to Mike, Grime to Spline or Canned Fruit to Fresh Fruit, theTIMES they are achanglin.

im not sure

Iam sure what to think here. But maybe there is a deal going on behind our backs. TSMC recently was granted a right for certain technologies from intel to optimize there manufacturing process particu. http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/20090302corp_a.htm
Intel dous want to take over the GPU market and maybe it is part of there deal with TSMC that they gave TSMC some technologies to delay both AMD and nvidia in there creation and sales of there new chips so larabee will be more succesful. that is the most logical strategie i can imagin behind the so unexplainable shortages. it is like the phenom 1 series all over again. intel got what it wanted by delaying AMD just enough there and then hector Ruiz too did had his motives to delay AMD from making any succeses in the cpu market as to acquire ATI. as you people might now understand since he had relations outside AMD for the galleon deal and the foundry spin off more of a rip off but profitable to him and his friends. just like the way dell and HP got 100k free cpus from intel to kill AMD sales. The whole market is a game and those who misteriously win all the time certainly have there tactics behind the scenes. its not for nothing nvidia got there bumpgate problems as well as AMD having there TLB bug this all is infavor of those who beleve others should be eaten. more reviews and benchmarks favor intel this is much part of there monopoly game i beleve. they are the ones who win if amd and nvidia cannot compete

Your sort of right.

Your right but its the wrong company. Try Intel.

Those agreements most likely came with some manufacturing problems for AMD.

I blame nVidia :-)

it’s a conspiracy! nVidia paid TSMC to slowdown the production. LOL

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
