Top UK shopping site hit by bug

Help lines jammed
Mon Nov 09 2009, 10:27

ONE OF THE BIGGER UK retail websites has been battered by some serious bugs in its online ordering system.

Punters received emails from Play.com reporting the dispatch of orders they did not place and when they opened the emails they found the names and addresses of other Play.com customers.

Help lines for the website, which flogs DVDs. CDS, games and movies, were jammed over the weekend as people rang in to complain.

One bloke complained to the Beeb that he awoke to find more than 80 emails from Play.com with each email packed with another customer's name and their order. He said, "I'm a big customer of theirs but not that big."

Customer services told him that Play.com had a "massive problem."

A Play.com spokesperson announced that the problem affected some customers for a short period of time. The company said no personal financial information was compromised and the cause of the incident has been identified and resolved.

However she stopped short of saying what suddenly caused the fault at a company that's famous for winning awards for its happy punters. µ
