Google launches Dashboard service

The Google knows all about you
Thursday, 5 November 2009, 14:50

SEARCH ENGINE Google has announced a new Dashboard service that shows you all the information about yourself on your Google account.

Basically the dashboard is the starting block where you can, with one click go to your Blogger account or your Gmail. It also holds information such as your occupation, age and anything else that you've added in the 'about me' section.

Terrifyingly, it also can show you which of your contacts your have been speaking to recently, what calendars you have access to and what was the last thing you put on there and even what you've been looking at on YouTube.

Google hopes that this will also help people rediscover accounts that they had forgotten about. Google News and Google Wave have yet to be added. There is the option to modify or in some cases delete the information next to each section.

Google says, at the bottom of the page, "This page represents the data associated with this Google account. All data is private unless indicated with [an] icon as visible to others".

There is a video here that explains the dashboard in more detail. You'll soon find a link to Google Dashboard in the personal settings of the My Account page. Or visit https://www.google.com/dashboard/ µ

Wouldn't Trust Google This time

To some - google dashboard could be a handy tool for their busy life, but to a geek who work in total privacy this could be a real threat to their security

- As said from the mouth of Microsoft CEO:

"Google reads your gmail account once ina while" when you're under scrutiny.

@ Peetee

I think in quite the opposite direction:
For those interested in privacy it's great to have this opportunity to find at least some of Google's knowledge about their activities.

That way one can see where the personal security needs to be further tightened.

@Olle P, Peetee

I agree with Olle - Google's openess about what they do with ones data affords them a lot more trust in my opinion.

Microsoft do exactly the same sorts of things, but they don't tell you, allow you to manage it, or let you opt out easily.

I also like the philanthropic nature of Google. Bill Gates tries now he has handed over the reigns, but he is essentially a capitalist and therefore should be stoned to death (again, just my opinion!)
