Scottish boffins scan historic places

Preserving them digitally
Thursday, 5 November 2009, 10:44

A TEAM of Scottish boffins is going around the world making digital scans of famous landmarks to keep a record of them for future generations.

According to the New York Times the idea is that they will make laser scans and 3D computer models of famous places so that the details can be stored for future generations.

The results should be the most complete and precise three-dimensional models ever of each site, millions of times more detailed and accurate than the best photographs or films, precise down to the tiniest fraction of a millimetre.

Using the information the experts can conjure up what objects looked like ages ago. They can simulate the effects of climate change, urban encroachment or other natural or man-made disasters on those same sites.

Douglas Pritchard is behind the Digital Design Studio and heads the Scottish laser expedition with David Mitchell, director of Historic Scotland's Technical Conservation Group.

He said the technology is getting so close that it was no longer a million miles from the 'Star Trek' holodeck.

So far the team has scanned a decaying iron bridge in Dundee, which was nearly impossible to survey with much accuracy except by laser. They have also done Stirling Castle and Rosslyn Chapel.

Mitchell points out that if Windsor Castle had been scanned after the 1992 fire then the restoration work would have been a doddle.

Another case was the Buddha statues in Afghanistan that the Taliban blew up in 2001. µ

Downside...

I know there is not much stopping them now, but I'm sure once they have a "3D photo" developers (and those that accept their back-handers and approve the plans) are not going to think twice about flattening some of out most beautiful and historic buildings.

This week Theatre Royal Chatham, tomorrow Stone Henge and Glastonbury Abbey (Prime plot that, right in the middle of town, wonderful central location... Sainsburys or Tescos I think).

Flatten

They have already been up here to Orkney in the north of Scotland. Scanned the Black building, an old WWII building built to control the arial defence of Scapa Flow. A building of great historic importance but they are going to be flattening it any time soon.
