HTC Hero gets Eclair update

Android 2.0
Thu Oct 29 2009, 14:26

PHONEMAKER HTC has announced that it will be bringing Eclair to its Hero smartphone.

The HTC Hero will be the first HTC handset to receive the Android 2.0 Eclair update, although more are expected to be announced.

But don't expect the update too soon. In a statement, HTC said, "Because Eclair is a significantly enhanced release, it will require some time to update Sense for this new version of the Android OS."

HTC also perkily announced the Android 2.0 update on its twitter feed saying: "The rumors are true! Hero will be getting an Eclair update. We ask for your patience as we update Sense for the fancy new Android OS.".

Although not officially announced, as all HTC Android smartphones rely on the same CPU, it shouldn't be long before we see other handsets getting this update too.

Eclair is also now available to developers, as Google has just announced that the Android SDK supports the latest version of the OS.

Android 2.0 comes with new developers' APIs for sync and Bluetooth, as well as lots of new user features.

The recently announced Motorola Droid will be the first Android handset to include the Eclair update and will be available from November 6th, so HTC best not dawdle too long. µ

In reply to andrea's questions:

1) The official release update is not known at the moment in Europe or America so Singapore is unknown also. When it does come out I presume you download it to your computer and update it via USB sync.

2) Yes it will upgrade directly.

Yup

The G1 doesn't have enough memory space to hold the 2.0 build, so if a special watered down version of the 2.0 OS is not made specifically for the G1 then no, 1.6 will be it's last update.

Older phones

So the G1 is to be totally overlooked then?
