NOKIA HAS called down upon itself the wrath of Steve Jobs by daring to sue the glorious Iphone religion.
Nokia dares to suggest that Apple's Iphone technology did not spring virgin from the brow of St Steve of Cappuccino but actually had been previously patented by Nokia.
It seems that the Nokian kings of Espoo claim that the Iphone infringes Nokia's patents for GSM, UMTS and wireless LAN (WLAN) standards.
Nokia said it had invested €40 billion in R&D during the last two decades and it is hardly fair that Jobs' Mob claims to have invented stuff it has spent its hard earned dosh to develop.
It is not patent trolling either. Nokia has already successfully flogged licenses to 40 companies, including virtually all the leading mobile device vendors. Only Apple claims that it invented the technology it uses in the Iphone itself and has refused to pay up.
Nokia's lawsuit, filed today in US District Court in Delaware, alleges that the Iphone infringes ten patents relating to devices that are compatible with one or more of the GSM, UMTS (3G WCDMA) and wireless LAN standards. The patents cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption, and are infringed by all Apple Iphone models shipped since the Iphone was introduced in 2007, Nokia claims.
Ilkka Rahnasto, vice president, legal and intellectual property at Nokia said it was a basic principle in the mobile industry that those companies that contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property and other companies have to pay to use it.
Apple refused to follow this principle because it refused to agree appropriate terms for Nokia's intellectual property. Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation, he said. µ
Hopefully Nokia makes Apple pay. A lot.
Nokia is just being unreasonable here.. I mean just because the lesser beings pay to use it tech doesn't mean they can charge the Divine! .. bloody cheek
In other news, Apple users (all 17 of them) are boycotting Nokia!
those patents are with the gsm chip that
apple uses and therefore the makers of that chip have paid for the license??
Does nokia patent cover using a gsm in a
mobile??
cut and paste by an apple fanboy writer.
hilarious.
I was hopping something like this to happen since Apple patented gestures.
Time to pay for being snobbish :)
they should just buy nokia. Apples profits this year are insane. $10 billion income this quarter alone. Went up too compared to last year. Must be the apple fans buying more of their products to give Nick a heart attack. Poor Nick must be stewing in his tea muttering swear words in the corner.
funny stuff :) - don't stop nick. I can just imagine the frustration you feel that no one really gives a sh!t what you say :)

Waiting for your spin on such a disastrous financial quarter... perhaps you missed this as you write on it every quarter?
No such thing as bad publicity.
Helps Apple in the US ("The company that sells lots of phones elsewhere in the world thinks Apple is worth going after").
Nick's probable Apple results headline: "iPod sales crash!"
NOKIA is a trend, in any product range there is a better solution from another phone manufacturer. NOKIA is cra.. I'm not saying Apple's the best but I'm really happy they've made the Iphone and induced this trend as Iphone is the only phone that really attracted my attention ever since having my first GMS Iphone 11 years ago. There rest were cra... NOKIA's just lots of publicity and moronic users that follow each other like sheep.
Typical that an apple fan boi can't understand maths... Apples figure show $1.67bn not $10bn like you seem to think.
Also bear in mind that in the world of mobile phones Nokia rules the market not Apple.
I forgot that nokia practicly invented all the wireless standards used today, if apple didnt pay Nokia there there is no way they invented a way to communicate with all of the wireless standards used today without infringing on Nokia's patints, this is totaly legit and apple needs to pay, every other phone manufacturer pays royalty's to Nokia apple needs to pay.
Seems like Nokia is just stating an example by not asking for more than a modest 1-2% of the sales value.
That's some $200,000,000.

I truly hope you're being sarcastic with your comments. If not, then I feel sorry for you. :)
Anyway, Apple is getting what they deserve. No one should like a free rider.
Why doesn't Apple buy Nokia with its $34 Billion cash and then shut it down
@hss1
Or the other way around? According to Forbes, Nokia is a larger company than Apple (sales, profits, assets).
FUCK APPLE
Actually Apple is worth nearly 4X Nokia net worth

But you only refer to market value, which only tells that. Like I said, pure size according to assets, sales and profits goes to Nokia. That's why Nokia is listed a larger company in the "Forbes 2000 largest companies in the world" listing.
Market value usually has a lot of air in it and tends to favor companies situated in the U.S. Meaning that those companies tend to be overvalued more often. Apple is a good example of that. Market value is much larger than the "true value" of the company.
The majority of the GSM and UMTS patents are held by Nokia and Ericsson. First Nokia is taking a crack, I see this as a protracted long battle unless the EU Court makes a serious ruling against Apple. They might since Nokia is an EU company and Apple is not!.
You are going to see settlements in the tune of 500M to 1B range which is nothing to Apple and they had to license the technologies for a fee anyway. There is no way to get around the patent laws. Fighting just delays the payments and it may escalate the price. Once that is done, who know, Eicsson might jst do the same for even more money ... it is just a reality that we see more often in US courts than in EU courts.
