Intel bolsters its Core i7 line up

Top of the range chip added
Wednesday, 21 October 2009, 15:53

INTEL VERY QUIETLY released a new addition to its Core i7 range with the launch of the 960, based on the 'Bloomfield' core.

The 45nm 3.2GHz quad-core processor can be bumped up to 3.46GHz thanks to Turbo Boost and boasts an 8MB L3-cache and a 4.8GT/s Quick Path Interconnect link inside a 130W power envelope.

Apart from the increased speed it's a fairly run of the mill LGA 1366 socket chip, although because it's not an Extreme Edition part, the multipliers are locked, unlike the similarly rated Core i7 965 Extreme.

Those hoping to pick up the Core i7 960 best swing by their bank first, thanks to the hefty $562 price tag. µ

hardly...

the top of the line chip.

i7 960 falls behind the i975 which carries the dread $999 Extreme Edition price tag and has been "available" for a few months now.

@Jean

Nope, not top of the line.

"top of the range", as the article says.

Come Back AMD All Is Forgiven

Looking at the prices of AMD versus Intel, Intel CPUs are almost double the price of equivalent AMDs. And the Intel CPUs which have no competitor are ridiculous money.

Phenom 965 = £150
Intel 975 = £750

Heaven only knows what we would be paying if AMD had flunked out entirely. Though its not like anyone forced AMD to flunk the first Phenoms or switch sockets twice, they only did that because they thought they had Intel under their thumb and got complacent.

They are as bad as each other evidently and the only situation which serves the punter well is to set them to battling one another. Nose to the grindstone AMD. No more phiascos please. Maybe they should put ATI in charge!

@Richard

ATI is to NVidia at the moment what Intel is to AMD.

They are currently lucky that NVidia is doing so hopelessly with their execution as Intel were with the Phenom (I) execution.

I can only see things getting worse as AMD's only current option seems to be to throw more cores at the problem with a 6 core desktop part coming soon.

Most desktop use barely makes use of 4 cores let alone 6 so what benefit will be gained is debatable.

AMD is nowhere near competitive with i7 and Intel could probably put a huge squeeze on AMD with little effort if they really wanted to with theiri3 and i5 variations coming soon.

Richard... don't be an idiot.

The I7 975 is £750 because it outperforms the Phenom 965 in every way, shape, and form. Literally, that higher-priced intel chip stomps all over EVERY offering from AMD.

They charge higher prices because they have better parts. Period. There is no contest. Even the huge AMD fanbois at The INQ have admitted that.

Talking about AMD...

AMD need a more competitive solution ASAP... we need competition... If AMD stay in it's actual situation, Intel is going to get lazy about launching innovative tech, the prices are going to freeze... that's NO GOOD for us, consumers...

We need a competent AMD to keep the game up with Intel, or we are going to see another Pentium 2/3 era.

AMD should give up on PC CPUs

They should stop burning their shareholder's money on the PC CPU market, and focus their efforts on Servers and ATI.

Wipe Nvidia (the recalcitrant and belligerent company that it is) off the planet and produce some seriously competitive server CPUs and chipsets... both areas are where the money is.
