Apple issues Time Capsule 'enhancements'

Is it a fix?
Wednesday, 21 October 2009, 15:26

WHILE APPLE FORUMS are fast filling up with posts about the unreliability of its Time Capsule backup gear, the fruit-themed toymaker has snuck out some 'updates' to the specification.

Since these changes will all appear in new models of the chocolate tea-pot of backup devices, they will be useless for those who are suffering with the existing kit.

Apple's press release makes no mention of reliability issues with other models and the tendency to die after two years of use. Instead it witters on about how the new Time Capsule will make backing up using Snow Leopard "up to 60 per cent faster than before."

By using the latest 802.11n wireless technology, you'll see "up to five times the WiFi performance and up to twice the range of 802.11g wireless networks."

We notice the press release does not say what it is comparing its figures to. It could be that the wireless technology is five times faster than writing it on a cat and sticking it in a filing cabinet. But it is just as reliable, since the cat may be dead or alive, just like Time Capsule.

Since the old Time Capsule machines died after just two years and Apple has largely denied that there is a problem with them, we guess it will be another two years before we find out if Jobs' Mob installed a fix in this specification release. Word on the street is that it was all caused by a dodgy power supply. µ

More Farrell Rubbish

That's not the ONLY thing they released yesterday Farrell, you moron.

How about the new iMacs? How about the updated Macbook? Or the Magic Mouse? Or the new remote? Or the updated Mac Mini?

Leave it to you to pick one thing and slant your article.

You are so biased. I can't believe you still have a job.

Enough is Enough

@ FarrelledbyNik GET A LIFE!!
You seem to have mental issues so maybe this is not a great place for others to see your hatred,at least for me.
He picked ONE item to speak about.
others ARE covered is their articles.
I dont have any idea who Nick or any other writers of The Inquirer are and it does not matter. These comments are to love or hate or get information about tech.If you just want to bash people find another place to do it.

Nick you make me ROTFLOL

I think, both 'funny' and 'poignant', you're 'should-ing' all over yourself...and that's...okay. It's easier to put on slippers than to carpet the entire world.

Daily Affirmation Media-tation:

* I am so glad that Mr. Jobs is back at the helm and things will get done.
* He is so generous. I would not be surprised if he were to spontaneously donate to every TCO the new Time Capsule transplant. Because, you know the TC is like a big failure in life in a shame spiral, really.

* But Steve Jobs IS Good Enough, Smart Enough, and Doggone It, People Like Him.

* And Nick Farrell, is a perfectionist and when he starts making changes, he'll never stop.

Because, you know, like, I'm just sayin'!

I don't know what I'm doing. Any day now, they're gonna cancel my Time Capsule show. I'm gonna die homeless and penniless and twenty stones overweight. Unless a generous donation can be found out. I'm not worthy.

Ummmm

We notice the press release does not say what it is comparing its figures to.

The sentence you are complaining about couldn't be clearer! It says it's comparing the 802.11n figures to 802.11g. The exact speed figures and diagrams of range confirm it too.

If you haven't realised how the humor works over here then you should probably just go back to maclover.com or where ever it might be that you people congregate.

WHAT press release?

The Farrell has taken to making news up now. There's no sign of a recent press release relating to the Time Capsule in Apple's Press library.

Meanwhile if you buy a drive from ANY manufacturer you care to name you'll find that it has an annual failure rate of about 2% for the first couple of years of it's lifetime and increasing there after. Google did some fairly detailed research on this based on drive failures in it's data centres. Over a two year period there's about a 4-5% chance of a lightly used HDD failing.

Put this another way, sell 10,000 drives and expect to get 4-500 of them back under a 2 year warranty. So, on this basis and according to the ferrety one ALL hard drives are chocolate teapots.

Did I miss the earnings article?

Hmmm... every quarter Nick predicts doom for Apple earnings and follows it up with some spin about some specific item about the earnings showing 'disaster' is on the horizon...

Must've missed the earnings article on the INQ, and that astute "analysis" Nick does while carefully going through it.

I'm also troubled by the information that Mac revenue was UP year on year! Surely after being told that people don't want to buy expensive Apple rubbish and the economy most like to take it's toll on people buying expensive toys, this can't be true? I mean most other IC and computer folks are showing declines year on year - is Apple cooking the books? :)

Say it ain't so Nick.... or not man enough to actual print the truth - are you a blogger or a writer?

Rotten apples

@ FarrelledbyNik, warning, please do not read this post (it is specifically designed to open the minds of some Apple-lovers, and thus could prove upsetting to you).

It is unfortunate that "some" Apple customers appear to behave as if they were the most thin-skinned, easily offended, most brainwashed individuals on the web.

- Apple products explode, lose data, overheat, crack, get pawned by malware, are generally insecure, apparently due to inflated corporate egos who seem to think that proper programming conventions no longer apply to them. Oh, and they are hugely overpriced, and allow little to no user customization to boot.

- Yet a significant segment of the population still drink Job's kool-aid, and just can't wait to throw their money at any and all new Apple products (while staunchly defending their choice of income disposal to any and all who will listen). They appear to like being controlled and told exactly what to do by Saint Jobs.

Someone should start a recovery group for these individuals, to enable them to develop more autonomy, and perhaps learn to make due with reliable, non-exploding, standard-grade hardware running something secure and economical (like Linux?). There are proven psychological techniques developed for deprogramming purposes that would probably work just fine. Just think of all the grocery money you could have!

flamebait

that is all these stories are set to do.

If you are an apple lover, stop coming here. If you are a PC lover then why the hell do you guys waste time coming in here and preaching to the masses.

its all a scam to keep up hits. Nick Farrell writes these stories to keep the hits up, because the inquirer thrives on trash. Since Charlie left to do his own thing with AMD there is nothing else here. This is the worst sense of the word journalism and it wouldn't be tolerated anywhere else because good writers can write outside the small confines of what they are told to write about to get hits/money.

I don't know how nick sleeps at night, knowing he has to wake up and write the same garbage everyday. Must be an absolute chore for him.

Re: flamebait

I makes you wonder, why would you stop coming if someone expresses an opinion that you dislike?

What will we do next? stick our heads in the sand and hope the next time we look up someone will say something we approve of?

Apple is just a compnay, like many others. Sure it managed to carve out a niche, good for them!

Are they beyond criticism? ridicule? or any of the same things other companies go through?

If you own an apple product and you love it, great. Personally I'd be upset to pay any device that in actuality is not 200% more like it's price.

OH NO! DON'T HURT MY iFeelings! I WON'T COME NO MORE! BOO HOO HOO

And that's another reason...

...Why you should always use high quality power supplies.

Electricity is the fuel of all our computers and gadets, yet it's amazing how many people will power their $3000 gaming PC from horribly designed and bad quality PSUs.

If the Time Capsule is indeed dying because of a PSU problem, shame on Apple, they should know better. (well actually, they probably do. Just they most likely didn't care)

Oh brother.

Another Nick Ferrell production.
I really think he should write for Heat magazine or the Sun. That will be more his Forte.
What happened to the old Inq?

Jeez

Some strong Apple lovers here.
Here is how I see it:
If I want to buy a car I can buy a Toyota or a Merc.
On paper they are pretty the same, and do the same thing etc.
A Merc just cost double the price.
Now if i have money and like the image I buy a Merc.
If I am practical or don’t want to fork out the dosh, the Toyota.
Don’t know about you. I have a Toyota but would like the Merc.
But at the end of the day, who cares?
Toyota sells more cars because they cater for the masses. Merc for another market.
At the end of the day its personal choice.
Nick just love shaking the cage to see who screams. And he is an idiot, to be fair.

MACTARDS

Nick is just pointing out how Apple refuse to acknowledge any problems with their kit.

You MacTards go back to your overpriced PCs, running Linux and stop winging. And yes, I own a Iphone!

time capsule

Well to be fair to nick, an unreliable backup device is worth mocking. It should be mocked. And apple is fun to mock because they act they like they are better than everybody else.

Who backup the backup?

A backup device that fails...
Does I need to talk anything else?

Apple... bad.
Apple Pie... good!

Choose it correctly.
