I observe the physician with the same diligence as the disease - John Donne
US BOXMAKER Dell has described Windows Vista as 'a bust' and is pinning its hopes on Windows 7 for a sales turnaround in 2010.
Dell's president for large enterprise, Stephen Schuckenbrock told Reuters reporters, "Windows 7 is the best quality product launch that Microsoft has had in a very long time. When you consider that Vista was a bust, Windows 7 is a capability upgrade on a scale that has really never been seen before."
Schuckenbrock is also hoping Windows 7 will be snapped up by firms that skipped Vista and that they will invest in new desktops and servers.
But Schuckenbrock denied that sales are all that drives Dell saying, "We're not unit [sales] focused. We're focused on the healthy balance of our business.... We don't want to chase things that don't make sense."
Dell and Lenovo have both seen PC unit sales fall over the past year, largely because of their reliance on corporate spending.
Michael Dell commented last week that the company was feeling bullish and was planning more deals in a variety of service industries, including healthcare.
Acer overtook Dell as the world's number two PC brand this year. This was due to its success in the low-cost netbook PC segment according to IDC and Gartner.
Microsoft will launch Windows 7 tomorrow. µ
Acers lesson is one that all PC makers should take on board, including component mfr's.
'Pile 'em High, Sell 'em Cheap',the alternative is to make them as ornaments
for retailers.
It's price shifts that drive a market, especially as we are now in a buyers one, which is here to stay-period.
Any business that thinks it can make mega bucks, by screwing the customer,is in for a nasty shock.

One day, people will realize that there is a better way...
I was wondering, nine different consumer windows in twenty years, each more secure then the last. Why is McAfee and Norton and the others still around covering Microsoft's asses when it comes to the security of Windows.
If it was such a bust, then why did they sell it with their computers for the last 4 years?
Bunch of hypacrits.
1 word: USERS!!!
Duh! Because that's what MS demanded?
In all fairness, Dell was one of the few companies that offered the option of pre-installed XP "downgrades" with lots of their models, while at the same time offering XP drivers for pretty much every model on their support site.
Compare that to HP (for example), with an almost non-existent range of XP options and absolutely no XP drivers available for their Vista-only models.
Remember When DELL had to offer retrograde back to xp when Vista machines turned BAD. well those same machines will now do -=7=- Perfectly. Demand FREE Replacement disc, its much better machine under -=7=- & drivers galore too.
drashek tackynician.
Back when Vista came out as a coupon for a free copy with a purchased copy of XP - Media center edition, there was a hack/cheat to utilize both operating systems on two different computers (Microsoft intended that the XP copy would be sacrificed when you activated Vista). I want to do the same thing again. I got a laptop preloaded with Vista and the free upgrade coupon to 7. How do I do that hack/cheat again?
Because self-replicating, and/or malicious code can operate even within a good security model, on a system without exploits. The fact that companies make money detecting such software doesn't mean they're "saving" Microsoft's butt. Anyway, we all know that Microsoft would be in a world of hurt if it "abused its monopoly" by shipping Windows with a virus scanner.
Because there is a LOT of money in it. Duh! Did you think Symantec and the other AV companies were doing it out of the kindness of their hearts? Being forced by the government? An Alien conspiracy? Were you wearing your tinfoil hat when you thought of that question?
What better way is that? Linux? Joe Sixpack and Jill Homemaker can't get a software install right when all they have to do is click "Next". What will happen when they try to figure out a package manager?
Or Apple? Most ppl won't pay more than $400 USD for a computer. They also can't seem to learn something as basic as AV software, let alone a new OS. Not to mention the cries of outrage and mass suicides of smug Apple fanboys when the unwashed masses migrate to their beloved overpriced/hyped MAC world.
@Uncle: If M$ bundled an effective security suite free of charge with Windows, the security vendors would be crying to the government to slap M$ with more antitrust charges.
@tc: You are on the right track. DHell is the wal-mart of the computer industry, cheapening their products and services as much as possible. The buying public is noticing and NOT choosing DHell--simple as that. Blaming Vista is a cheeap shot, but what do you expect from DHell?
If there was a better way then you would see more people using something other than Windows... and then that company would have the same problems Microsoft has. Microsoft can't possibly make everyone happy and be profitable, but they do try and give customers what they want the problem is that different customers want different things. Granted Windows should be a lot cheaper for home users and this is probably one of the biggest reasons a lot of people will stay on XP. I for one will not upgrade to Windows 7, but unlike Vista the next PC I buy will not be downgraded and I will happily use the Windows 7 that comes installed.
@ nECrO Is your name short for necrophilia. Could be why you missed my point, not even close. That or your trolling for Microsoft.
@ Isma'il. My point is that after all this time, close to 20 or more years, their are still so many holes in their coding.
I, like many, would bash Microsoft and wish there was some kind of open standard. And then I grew up. I realized that people are just basically dumb. They need help. And as bad as I might think Microsoft is, they give me something that works as advertised (for the most part). Apple does too, but who wants that gawdy crap on their desk or palm or wherever.
Vista was no more a “bust” than Windows Seven will be.
I have used Windows 7 Beta for a few months and I would have to say that I really like it. It is much quicker and programs don't lag even when you running multiple programs at once. There are some sweet features introduced into Windows 7 and the overall use is much easier and simpler. Microsoft took Windows 7 seriously and they needed to do this. I have written a detailed experience about my use of Windows 7 and I hope you can find it helpful. Please comment and let me know

It is still too early to determine what kind of problems might rise from Windows 7, but overall I think it will be a great operating system.
I'm curious why the author has labelled Dell "US Boxmaker" with one quick stroke. Based on our knowledge of Dell they are far from being a one trick pony so to speak.
