Sun to sack 3,000 workers

You probably were not expecting this
Wednesday, 21 October 2009, 13:32

SUN HAS ANNOUNCED that it will cull more than 3,000 jobs worldwide, or about 10 per cent of its workforce.

Although Oracle is in the process of acquiring Sun, the purchase is still waiting for regulatory approval from the EU.

While many expected the sale to Oracle to result in some downsizing at Sun, it is somewhat surprising that job cuts at the big tin server and software company have been announced before the buyout deal is sealed.

Apparently the job losses are all the fault of the EU Competition Commission. Its pursuit of an in-depth probe of the transaction is causing uncertainty about whether and when the deal might go through in its expected form, which in turn is causing Sun to lose about $100 million every month, according to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison.

The fact that IBM and HP are carving up Sun's customer base because no one really expects Oracle to prop up the hardware side of the business has nothing to do with the losses, apparently. Neither are the facts that Sun has been getting a good kicking during the recession and is losing some of its most talented engineers.

The pink slips and P45s will be handed out at Sun over the next year. µ

Many Sun employees already gone

The local Sun office in my city had about 20 people - there's less than 10 today - all laid off since the merger. If there's even more cuts to come then it'll be a couple of support technicians left to turn out the lights.

Wow ... ORACLE is such an innovative company ... yeah RIGHT!

Stupid company (ORACLE) making old and overpriced software, lacking any real scientific evolution, destroying an innovative company that were really inventing really good CPUs. The Niagara and others were a wonderful concept.
