The BBC will not share Iplayer

Keep your filthy paws off it ITV
Wednesday, 21 October 2009, 12:04

THE BBC will not be allowed to share the use of its Iplayer technology with other broadcasters.

Aunty had proposed sharing its Iplayer technology to help the other channels after the digital switchover.

The BBC Trust which makes sure that the BBC does not get too common said that while it liked the principle of sharing Iplayer more widely, that would not deliver value to licence-fee payers.

It felt that the proposals, which had features of both commercial and public service operations, were too complex for the riff-raff to understand.

That is not to say it has rejected the idea out of hand, it just wants the BBC to come up with something that will make a bob or two.

ITV, Channel 4 and Five produce public service broadcasting in exchange for free access to the airwaves, but after the switch to digital TV, which will be completed by 2012, they will have to compete with other media organisations.

The plan that the trust rejected would have meant that the other TV networks could use its technology to create their own versions of Iplayer.

Iplayer allows viewers and listeners to catch up on programmes they may have missed, up to a week after broadcast. µ

BBC thrift

Sounds more like the BBC want to charge for licensing their I-player, which seems reasonable enough, actually, though maybe they should consider other cases than commercial enterprise eg schools and colleges, open university etc.

The Tories take any opportunity to attack the BBC at the moment because they dont want them to tell anyone about how the Tories have promised Murdoch they will nerf Ofcom and let Murdoch control British media if he tells the Sun writers to win the election for them.

I wonder what sort of anti BBC bile will be stirred up between now and the election by these opportunists and their axis of evil.

I wonder if the Chinese will like the idea of Murdoch playing politics in the countries where he is permitted to set up shop.

If I was the BBC I'd give it away

since Iplayer is easily cracked to allow downloading of the content you want, imagine downloading all commercial content and being able to skip past the adverts! It would at least save 10 million kettles going on simultaneously and reduce the need for energy companies squandering public money
And from the beedbs point of view: No more groundbased competition!

Need to Focus on Quality & Content

The i-Player form BBC is good, but I find it lacks quality when compared to some of the other offerings, such as 4OD or Sky Player. As these other companies already have their own versions of streaming media, why would the BBC want to provide this? I would like them to focus on improving the quality for high bandwidth consumers and offering more content form their own back catalogues, not on offering other channels that I can already access.

@Ben

Improving quality? Iplayers 1500kbps h264 and HD streams are already far higher quality than 4oD's steams.
