Visual Studio 2010 and .Net framework betas land

On track for March release
Tue Oct 20 2009, 14:35

THE SECOND BETA version of Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and its .Net Framework 4 are  available for download to Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscribers now and to the masses from tomorrow.

Volish programmers will be able to try out and use IDE enhancements for modelling, coding, testing and debugging as well as built-in tools for Windows 7, SharePoint 2010, Silverlight and Windows Presentation Foundation.

"Developers face demanding, complex and fast-paced environments today; this next wave of tools and technologies will help simplify the development process from design to deployment and will enable developers to use their existing skills and knowledge to build better software, faster," said S. Somasegar, senior vice president of the Developer Division at Microsoft.

"Now is the time to test drive the new functionality and features in these releases, which address everything from Windows 7 and SharePoint support to collaboration and life-cycle management."

The new products are on track for a full release on 22 March 2010 and the Vole reckons it's simplified its pricing to just three main versions - ultimate, premium and professional.

MSDN subscribers will also get unlimited access to Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010 when it is released, a server product to help boost team collaboration, Azure development support and e-learning for up to 40 hours per year, per subscriber.

MSDN Premium subscribers opting for the Ultimate offer will also get test and development rights for Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008, Office and premium Visual Studio tools.

The beta versions can be downloaded from the MSDN site. µ

Is full of win.

Back to the main topic, I found:
1) VS2008 to be excellent
2) VS2010 beta 1 to be hideous

So let's see how this turns out. I'm reluctant to install VS2010 after my previous experience with beta 1

Excited

If I was any more excited about this news, I would literally crap my pants.

Developers, developers, developers...

are what is keeping Microsoft "strong", as Monkey Boy said. I hope these "developers" stop pouring effort into something that is designed to enhance Microsoft fat-client lock-in, and move to a platform-neutral development language (such as java, etc.). This will be more and more important as more businesses move to Linux-based thin clients (IMHO, Microsoft's "mono" is an admission of this trend, and an effort to maintain some control over evolving IT systems).

Broken record

"...this next wave of tools ... to build better software, faster ..."
Blah, blah. This is the next spinning of the broken record called "Visual" Studio probably with new ribbon interface (M$ Office anyone)?
Will they (M$) ever learn devs need more than their promises and new interfaces?!?

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
