NASA has seriously neglected the security of its networks leaving it vulnerable to hackers, a US Congressional report has found.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) report found that NASA has significant problems protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the information and the various networks supporting its mission centres.
Specifically it found that the space agency still does not do enough to prevent, limit, and detect unauthorised access to its networks and systems, either internally or externally. It concludes that the agency has yet to become a hardened target.
NASA reported 209 incidents of unauthorised access to US-CERT during fiscal years 2007 and 2008. It is also the single most hacked agency in the US federal government.
One of the most famous NASA hacks was by Gary McKinnon, who is accused of hacking into 97 United States military and NASA computers in 2001 and 2002. In July 2009, McKinnon lost his appeal in the British High Court and is expected to be extradited to the US to stand trial.
The GAO's investigation into NASA security found many examples where basic password protections were not followed on NASA's computers. In one incident a data centre reported the theft of a laptop containing roughly 3,000 files of unencrypted International Traffic in Arms Regulations data including information for Hypersonic Wind Tunnel testing and possibly personally identifiable information.
The report found that NASA had not yet fully implemented key elements of its information security program. However NASA said that reforms were already under way before the report was issued. µ
Probably because they have the same budget allotment as ethiopia's military. The gov't is wasting all our money on bullshit rather than NASA so our space program is a joke and their security is too.
These guys bombed the freaking moon, don't you know dere loco?
That "Houston we have a problem" joke is so played out. Can we let it rest?!
Back When drashek Created Universe. Much Was Left Unspoken. Now NASA Has Clearer Idea of Where We Are.

What did they do with the $100+ millions of dollars used to fix this problem some 4 years ago. It looks to me the security problem are the incompetent people paid to fix the problem and never did. I guess this is what happens then you hire your buddies to do a job they have no idea how to do. It is the corruption in the government that is the real security risk.
I'm in my 30s now, but as a teenager most of the phreakers in the city of Houston were using NASA's PBX (it was codeless) for making long distance calls. This was going on for years, until one fine day I read a report in the Houston Chronicle about hackers running up millions in NASA telephone bills. The number to the PBX remained the same, but required some access code to dial out. By that time, ANI (caller ID) was introduced so no one dared to touch that system again... at least no one that I knew did.
It really doesn't make a difference to them, as the whole system is paid with tax dollars.
