SMIC shrinks its chip processes

45nm to 40nm
Fri Oct 16 2009, 12:31

CHINESE CHIP MAKER SMIC has said it plans to extend its 45nm bulk CMOS to 40nm.

The move is widely seen as an attempt to get back into the technology running after its rivals have been getting all the more cleverer in getting higher tech chips out.

The 45nm process is based on technology licensed from IBM but apart from that SMIC is keeping its cards close to its chest. It is not clear, for example when low leakage versions of the process will be mixed into general production.

Richard Chang, president and CEO, said in a statement that the 45nm technology had been implemented at SMIC's 300mm facility in Shanghai ahead of schedule and he was looking forward to a similar result at the new processes. µ

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
