The Itanium is an architecture that will be around for the next 20 years
THE RUMOUR MILL has come up with another tale about a Nokia Linux phone.
The story circulating is that the Nokia N920 could be released with Maemo 6 Linux next year.
What is strange is that the rumours are starting even before Nokia has released its N900 Linux phone. Industry sources claim that the N920 will replace the N900.
Details on the Linux phone specs are thin. There is a leaked photo, but that's not giving much away.
It does look like the new N920 may be equipped with a 4.13-inch capacitive, multitouch screen.
What is perhaps more interesting about the rumours is that, if they are true, it seems that Nokia is committed to bunging Linux into its smartphones. µ
It's been known for quite some time that more devices with different form factors (eg. larger screen, without keyboard, capacitive instead of resistive screen) will become available after the N900 in H1 2010... but running Maemo 5, not Maemo 6. And possibly called the N920. All of this has been circulating on the talk.maemo.org forums for months, which is essentially the source of your "news" story (not suprised you didn't want to quote a forum as a souce).
Oh, and the "leaked" picture is almost certainly photoshop'd as the device is clearly running Maemo 4 which doesn't run on Maemo 5-class hardware, and there would be no reason to force a working build of Maemo 4 on to the new device when Maemo 5 is already available. In addition, the chrome is just tacky - hardly the kind of design direction Nokia are headed in right now!
This will be THE phone to have.
It will be a real Linux phone. Yeah, Android is Linux too, but Android sits a layer above the Linux.
I hope Nokia's Maemo OS can get some traction against the rest. Exciting news.
Great answer by Neil.
This is just the photoshop and rumour jokers at it again based on a well established rumor.
Enough is enough. I can understand the mainstream press repeating these rumours but you are supposed to be tech savvy. One look at the pic and its obvious thats OS2008 not even Maemo 5. So I call photoshop BS like others have. Why don't you do that instead of parroting these stories without checking. How can I trust other articles from you guys now...? bye
