BT promises faster broadband

1.5 million more by 2012
Monday, 12 October 2009, 10:58

BRITISH TELECOM has promised that an extra one and a half million homes will have superfast broadband by 2012.

Initially BT said that it could only deploy so-called Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) to a million homes and businesses because of its cost.

However now it thinks it can get 2.5 million subscribers connected with FTTP because it will be cheaper to provide.

In addition more than nine million locations will receive the slower Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) technology by 2012.

Once BT said that it could lay FTTP only to new-build sites but now it thinks it has come up with a cunning plan using existing ducts, overhead cables and double sided sticky tape to install the gear.

Those who get FTTP technology will receive broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps. This compares to a top speed of 40Mbps for FTTC technology.

The FTTP project will be trialed in Bradwell Abbey in Milton Keynes and Highams Park, London. More than 20,000 homes and businesses will receive FTTP service by March 2010.

Meanwhile the Rural Coalition is bringing together six national organisations including the Campaign to Protect Rural England, the Country Land and Business Association, the Local Government Association and the Royal Town Planning Institute to pressure politicians to do more to get better broadband connections in rural areas.

The action has been backed by the Prince of Wales who said that schools, doctors' surgeries and other essential services were being left in the Internet "slow lane".

The Prince, who has several houses, said that the British countryside was in danger of becoming a series of "ghost villages populated by little more than second-home owners." µ

Indonesia

When I hear the headline like this article in Indonesia? Telkomsel menaikkan kecapatan Speedy 100 mbps. BT could you please like 3 (Three) to expand your ISP in Indonesia? I really like 100 mbps :X.

an idea to bring the cost down

if BT said "you can have fiber optic to your house but you'll have to cut your own trench", i'd bite their arm off.

All I care about...

... is latency, line quality and bandwidth caps...

Now having (up to)100mbs is all well and good, just don't hit me with a lag spike while gaming and throttle my connection as I view "rich media".

O'Rly?

Ho are they going to expand their network effectively if they can't fix the bloody Poplar exchange, that causes the only broadband NOT-SPOT in London ?

Obviously I'm one of the lucky buggers living there. Grrr.

Funny about Bradwell Abbey

I'm an Openreach Engineer that works in Milton Keynes, Now what people dont understand is that the Bradwell Abbey exchange which is what they are talking about isn't in Bradwell Abbey and also dosen't feed the Bradwell Abbey area. The exchange is off the Fishermead area and feeds the city and out towards the M1. I can forsee alot of confusion over this and i think they need to make it clear what areas will be provided not just the exchange area.

Faster, but don't try and use it...

Mmmm! BT upgraded my line from barely 5.5mbps (paying for 8mbps), to 1.5mbps (paying for 20mbps). How can this be? Well, I used by new found broadband speed, and hit BT's fair use limit. SO even though I've been given access to higher speeds, the fair use policy is still low, and very very poorly implemented. I'd like to tell then where to go, but I'm not likely to find any better service elsewhere at the moment. It makes me angry. I'm being forced to pay for a service that my provider is refusing to make available to me. Can I ask for some cash back I wonder? Mmm!

2012

Japan and Korea have had 160mb since last December. That's in the sticks too not just the big cities. There is talk of 1gb in the near future. Caps are unheard of here.

Uk, cough, pedestrian, cough, 3rd world, cough, clueless.
