HYNIX HAS JUST RELEASED low power 54nm 1Gb DDR3 memory chips.
According to the company the new memory runs at 1.5V which is the same as Hynix' first-generation 1Gb DDR3 product.
However, it reduces power consumption by 30 per cent which makes it jolly useful in virtualised environments, data centres, servers and supercomputers.
Hynix said that it could find its way into mobile hardware. That benefits from longer battery life and could take advantage of the low power memory chips to reduce power consumption.
With the cost of DDR3 now about equal to that its predecessor DDR2 it seems that the later will fall out of favour fairly soon. µ
