NVIDIA'S REFUSAL to let its users do what they like with the cards they have bought has sparked a backlash amongst hackers.
The Green Goblin miffed punters when it decided to block a feature on its cards to allow its card to be used for PhysX functions while a rival ATI card is present for graphics rendering.
With the release of a new batch of drivers, Nvidia stopped any non-Nvidia GPU present in the system from working.
Its latest version of PhysX System Software also prevents physics processing unit (PPU) cards from working if a Non-Nvidia GPU is present.
The Green Goblin insists that it is not going against the open software philosophy of Physx with its antics.
It says that any company can freely develop hardware or software that supports it. It is just that it is not going to be caught dead encouraging people to install a chip that is not blessed by Nvidia in their machines.
That appears to be what a hacker who goes by the handle of GenL has done.
He has written an experimental beta patch that intercepts Nvidia's disable-PhysX-if-Radeon-is-present code.
It can be found here and we reckon it will sail up the nasal passages of Nvidia.
According to the forum the patch works jolly well even if it only works for PhysX GPU rendering and not PPU rendering.
GenL said it is still a work in progress. µ
What with their substandard performance and downright flaky hardware, its not like we actually *needed* another reason never to buy nvidia cards.
But nvidia have kindly provided us with one anyway!
The little darlings.
So let me get this right, i've bought a BFG Ageia card and and now it wont work as i have a ATI card not an Nvidia one? Surly there must be some kind of legal issue here. Guess i'll be sticking with ATI as Nivdia just gave me the finger!
Good way to alienate customers, release drivers which disable your existing hardware for limited if not fabricated technical reasoning. Kinda limits the appeal of future nVidia chipsets or potential x86 if they are only going to allow nVidia GPU's operate on them.
I'm sure if Nvidia allowed people to dedicate a GeForce to PhysX, even with an ATi GPU for rendering, they would have a LOT of people buying either new mainstream cards, or second hand G80's...
They would sell cards, and advance the adoption of PhysX.
I'll be trying this out asap, was gonna do it yesterday but got up at 3pm.....
... on graphic circuits on the motherboard as well?
You don't see many motherboards with nVidia graphics out there. It's mostly Intel or ATI.
I'm not sure about the technical aspects but it seems logical to me this might be connected to MSI's immanent release of it's Big Bang Hydra equipped motherboard which will allow mixing Nvidia and Ati graphics boards at will presumedly allowing, say, mixing a cheap G80 based board with a 5850 or 5870, thus retaining full Physx capability while still using ATI as the primary gpu.
If it works as promised, Hydra equipped boards will rapidly take over the gaming segment of the motherboard market and my next motherboard will absolutely contain a hydra chip and just such a mix of boards would make for a perfect gaming computer.
If Nvidia disables Physx with an ATI board present, wouldn't game developers just shitcan physx altogether and move to ATI's Bullet physics solution?
@spigzozne
You don't need a Lucid Hydra chip to run, say, a GeForce 8800 GTS for PhysX and a HD5870 for graphics. Any motherboard with two full size PCI-E connectors will do. The negative side of this is of course that the 8800 GTS would only do the PhysX calculations, not any rendering. (But, as it seems, you'll need that workaround to do that now.)
The Lucid Hydra chip is for using two or more different GPUs for graphics. For example, if you have the old 8800 GTS and buy the new HD5870, you can use both of them for rendering graphics.
a response to ATI/AMD slapping the idea of developing stuff on the PhysX API instead. AMD/ATI decided they would rather not play with Nvidia's PhysX, developmentally, so Nvidia is acting like the snubbed kid and taking their PhysX and going home.
Both of them are freaking idiots.
Wahahahaaa we don't want to support Nvidia PhysX!
Wahahahaaa if you don't want to use PhysX, we'll take PhysX and go home!
Meh, bunch of freaking kids.
I wonder if Nvidia plans to do the same with the XboX 360, since it has an ATI GPU. . Sometimes I just hate this guys for those stupid decision.
Nvidia is stupid, they think that their physx code hardware is theirs. If I buy a product I own it whether it be music, cd or computer. I can do whatever I want with it. Who does nvidia think they are telling me I can't use their licensed physx crap with my ati card or intel card.
When I bought my nvidia card I own physx, I can do whatever I want with it including taking it apart. You know who else has these stupid tactics satellite companies. If I buy a receiver I can hack the card if I want, I own it. Who do they think they are, these companies got to learn. And another thing the government who the hell do they think they are. If I buy a house wtf why do I have to pay fking taxes I own the house it's my damn fking land. And what's with law if someone steps on my land I should be able to blow their head off I own it. If it's on my property I can do whatever I want to them or whatever. When will these stupid companies learn that just because they made something doesn't mean they own it. If they didn't want people to do this they shouldn't sell it. At least ATI doesn't rape women and children like Nvidia does. That company is full of crap they haven't put out a decent product ever. For all the money I have given them who do they think they are. If Charlie was here we could do something. Enough is enough. I am telling you who do they think they are. ATI gives you the world and nvidia is just in it to make money. All Nvidia cares about is the bottom line ATI doesn't care about that they care about the customers not money. ATI treats their customers right the way they should be treated.

As Arrogant as ever...
That's why AMD did not bought/merge with them in 2006. It goes against freedom of choice and customer centric policies.
I've had 2 8800GTS and my 650i die in under 6 weeks. 8800GTS definately the bump problem, the 650i had a weird PCI-Express issue and massive overheating, in a clean PC, not overclocked, well ventilated. In comparison, my Ti4200 still works. And i recently gave a friend my nForce3/6800GT PC.
I'm going to RMA both the 8800GTS, BFG are looking to actually do it outside warranty by the looks. I was considering keeping one for PhysX, and whilst i was going to consider keeping a replacement (as long as it has improved bump material) not really much point now, even with the patch. I don't want to give nVidia market share.
To the person above stating 'Oh, ATi snubbed nVidia so took their toys and went home'. Fair enough. Lest we forget these were nVidia customers that have clearly defected. Good way to get them to come back next generation. Specially when you see the amount of 8800 series cards there.
But of course, those who were snubbed are the people who generally speaking make alot of choices hardware wise. I mean, i recommend alot of hardware, business and home. I couldn't honestly recommend nVidia seriously currently. I'm waiting for some of the 8 series cards i've recommended previously to start exhibiting the bump issue.
For the record, weirdly every mobo i've owned has been nVidia, up until my new P35. First nForce for onboard graphics, 2/3s were good and 650i was fast. And market leading graphics chips at the time of purchase (Ti4200/6800GT/8800GTS). But never a fanboy, just happy with a working product that did what it said.
Been green a long time. Got a 5870 now.
Ed, they didnt had enough money to buy Nvidia, but still, nvidia pushed PhysX to AMD and AMD refused, they tried to go the HAVOK way, before they got bought by Intel. and now they have a third company, Bullet.
