Black is the new beige

Dell thinks businesses want style
Fri Oct 02 2009, 12:57

DELL HAS DECIDED that the world of business no longer wants beige tin machines and is going to have a crack at giving them a bit of style.

We are not talking Apple fit and finish here but the Dell Vostro 430 at least appears to be moving the conservative corporate market towards something a little more racy.

Okay it is black and still looks a bit like an oversized shoe box, but it is a lot nicer looking than many of the other Dell boxes in that price range.

For a starter price of $699 you can get models with Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPUs and graphics from ATI or NVIDA, so it has a fair bit of grunt too.

It has support for up to 16GB of RAM and up to 2TB HDDs. The machine also has vacant expansion ports for PCI and PCIe cards. The computer can also be optioned with Blu-ray drives and a memory card reader.

Whether or not corporates will suddenly think it is a good idea to become so radically chic is another matter. After all some managers still think it is a good idea to send a boy up with a wire brush to clean the chimney and a fax machine is considered frightfully modern technology. µ

I want to paint it black

but still, Oxford Colour is quite stylish, whatever your Balmorals and not withstanding troll patent leather.

WTF???

That thing is actually LESS stylish than most of the boxes Dell has been making in the last few years. Even the old Dimensions and Optiplexes had the gray trim (the Dimension even had the flip-up gray door hiding the impossible-to-use-unless-you-stand-on-your-head USB ports, but I digress).

I guess it's 4th quarter revenue time for the inq.

I like Black

I like PC that is bad style and it apperance just like 10 years ago, as long as:
1. it is durable, road warrior thing
2. The inside is not same as 10 years ago
3. cheap price

I like Thinkpad laptop because it just not much different than 10 years ago. I also rugged. It will confuse the thief whether they are stealing a 10 years laptop or a brand new one. Cheap price (hik, only in US cheap :((). This is one of only electronic device made in Chinna (Lenovo) that has world class quality. I have Dell D630. It also nice with the 3 factor above :).

Black Dells in companies! ZOMG!

Hm. Next to me is a person on WinME, 256MB SDRAM and a 16bit desktop. And that's a black Dell.

What's next? Apple making white machines?

DELL paying for ads to be inserted into the news?

Looks like a blatant plug for Dell considering the Vostro boxes have looked like that since day 1. How much did they pay to get there ad inserted in the news column??????

Dude, where have you been?

You been living under a rock for a few years there, chief?

Dell's machines have been coming in black since like 2003. Their Vostro machines have ALWAYS come in black, they never even made a beige Vostro.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
