A WEAKNESS in Palm's fairly cool update system has been revealed after the outfit's server crashed overnight causing many users to have their phones reset.
The Palm Pre uses a Synergy feature to connect to the Palm Profile server to continually synchronise and back up information.
This is normally a good idea, but if the Palm Profile server crashes then the Palm Pre has a crisis and decides the only way to deal with that is to do a hard reset and restore its factory settings.
Yesterday the server was taking a bit of a hit because it was updating the Palm Pre's WebOS 1.2 operating system and some users woke up to blank handsets that thought they were the same as the day they came out of the shop.
Until the server came back online, users were left with a smartphone that could only be used for phone calls. Everything came back to normal as the server woke up, but it must have spooked a lot of users.
Palm has not said whether, in its next upgrade, it will send out instructions to make sure that its smartphones don't lose their minds if they can't phone home for an hour. µ
May I ask where this information came from? I had no such issues with my Palm Pre, and this hasn't been reported on major sites like precentral.net.
Now that I know that, the iPhone is looking pretty good for that full discount AT&T is offering me for February 2010.
...since when did the industry standard for dealing with a backup failure become "delete the data we tried to back up and failed with a factory reset"? That really makes sense.
I really hope we don't get lots of gadgets that depends on phoning home to work..
