VODAFONE IS SET to start selling the Iphone throughout the UK and Ireland from early next year.
The deal seems to have been a long time in coming, with the first signs having appeared in May when the INQ picked up that Vodafone had started offering advice on its website about ways people could customise the Iphone.
The announcement follows yesterday's news that rival Orange will break O2's exclusive hold over Apple's wonder gadget. But Orange has a crucial advantage over Vodafone, as it'll start selling the Iphone before Christmas.
Although O2 has lost its two year exclusive grip on the Iphone, it has managed to replace this by teaming up with Palm to be the sole operator offering the Palm Pre.
Vodafone already sells the Iphone through thirteen of its operating companies.
Like Orange, the company has yet to announce an exact date, pricing or tariffs, but they are expected to be extremely competitive to try and entice potential customers to hold out rather than opting for a competitor.
The announcement seems to garnering a lot of interest. The Vodafone UK pre-registration site seems to have buckled under the pressure, claiming maintenance issues. µ

At last the EU proves useful for something. You'll see this open up all over the EU as what they have done is against competition law. If Vodafone sells it in Germany they must be allowed to sell it in the UK.
Will O2 iPhones be locked to O2, etc?
Let us hope that the competition will drive prices down for tariffs and phones.
