DESPITE ALL the announcements at this year's IDF, the idea well at Chipzilla HQ must be running low because the company is tapping attendees for their thoughts.
Intel dotted a series of whiteboards - with bins of blue marker pens nearby - across the show floors of the Mascone Centre asking a range of probing questions looking for people's ideas about 'the next big thing'.
Questions ranged from innocuous requests like "How do you see the future?" to blatant attempts to mine new concepts from the visitors by asking "How can technology make business more efficient?".
Others went a little more off the wall, asking "If technology could do anything for you, what would it be?" and "What will your kids' kids think is cool?"
Answers varied widely with many just jotting down a word or two, but others drawing elaborate diagrams to convey their answers.
Apparently not everyone took the specific question asked and just used the boards as a 'creative outlet', while one person simply asked "Where's Pat?" referring to Pat Gelsinger's absence from the show following the recent announcement that he would be leaving to join EMC.
So, if you happened to be at IDF and jotted down some revolutionary new concept on one of the boards, be sure to come back next year to see if Intel has adopted it as its own. But you shouldn't be holding your breath if you're looking for a payout. µ

Microsoft
has given system builders the OK to start selling new computers with Windows 7 installed prior to its official launch date of October 22. According to Puget Systems president Jon Bach, Redmond has given his company permission to ship Windows 7 systems on October 13, a whole nine days early.
Not only is that before Windows 7's general availability, but it's well ahead of when large computer manufacturers will be shipping their first 7-based systems. Companies like HP, Dell and Acer won't be entering the scene until the 22 -- a definite, if only temporary advantage for the little guy. "We have a long line of customers who are waiting for Windows 7,"

The next big thing, in fact what is already becoming the next thing is GPU computing. It's also nice to actually be able to play an *old* 3D game on your brand new laptop, or watch 1080p. You won't be doing any of those things with any machine that has Intel graphics.
I bought a brand new laptop after reading reviews that said it can "play 3D games" and do "1080p video". You must be kidding. Intel's drivers are so incompatible, World of Warcraft barely plays on 4500mhd. If they can't get WoW running well - a 5 year old uh, fairly popular game, you can pretty much forget everything after the year 2000. Artifacts, plain not even starting, slow...those are all trademarks of Intel graphics and have been for years. If they can't do any better than that after that long, LRB is going to no doubt be junk, too.
Intel, contract out with a real graphics maker! Stop fooling around trying to make your junk work, and provide real solutions because GPU computing is here, and your chips have totally missed the boat. A big clue that you missed it is the fact that we've been hearing for years about the savior LRB, and the best you've offered is it doing ray-tracing poorly.
