FREECOM ANNOUNCED its Hard Drive XS 3.0 today, calling it the first external hard drive in the world to offer SuperSpeed USB 3.0 technology.
USB 3.0 is still pretty much in its infancy and consumer products weren't really supposed to appear until next year at the earliest. Its security is still being questioned, and work still goes ahead on implementing the new standard. None of this has stopped Freecom from ushering its USB 3.0 hard drive out in time for the Christmas holidays.
Freecom's Hard Drive XS 3.0 offers transfer speeds of up to 130 MBps and is also the smallest 3.5" desktop hard drive available, according to the company.
It will work with forthcoming USB 3.0 interfaces and is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports.
Supporting the hard drive are USB 3.0 controller cards that must be used to take advantage of USB 3.0 data throughput of up to 500 MBps, roughly ten times that of USB 2.0. Freecom's USB 3.0 Controller Card for desktops is priced at £23 and its Express Controller Card for notebooks costs a bit more at £26.
The Freecom Hard Drive XS 3.0 will be available in Europe from mid-November in 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB capacities. Prices will start at £99.99 for the 1TB model. µ
...and I am reading from a USB 2.0 drive or writing to a USB 2.0 drive, can someone explain to my over-worked brain what this will effectively mean?
My thinking is that this will effectively max out the USB 2.0 controller and not really confer any benefits? Or am I wrong?
but I am a slow reader
Little Bird Wispered, Plug it into usb 2 port & get Less, Lots Less, thats whole point of esata port. Why Not Multi Headed external?

It great to see Europeans are going to get it by November but I want this stuff as well in the U.S. It'll be fun when I've got my data synced by 2.0 and then get attack by 3.0 speeds on a p.c with 3.0 tech.
