Asus shows a Skype video phone

With a touchscreen

ASUS HAS ANNOUNCED a standalone Skype videophone, the AiGuru SV1T, now incorporating a touchscreen to make video calling even easier for Granny.

20090917-a-1

Asus's partnership with Skype produced the AiGuru SV1 around this time last year. It's a device that's a standalone Skype-to-Skype videophone. For all intents and purposes it is a netbook with a webcam that only runs Skype.

Now Asus has updated the SV1 model number to include the letter "T", where the "T" stands for touchscreen.

As with the original device, video calls to SV1s and SV1Ts plus other Skype clients are all free. Calling regular landlines and mobiles is chargeable with credit having to be purchased in advance from Skype.

It appears that not much else other than the addition of the 7-inch touchscreen has changed from the original device.

This model has been launched in Russia, Canada and the USA at $300 with availability in Blighty expected the second week of October. No UK price has been announced, but the original costs £200.

We firmly believe the SV1T is ideal for Granny to make video calls to her wee grandkids without getting bogged down in the ins and outs of a netbook, notebook or desktop PC with a webcam.

Currently the downloadable version of Skype isn't touchscreen enabled. Seeing as the edition included in the SV1T clearly is, we're thinking that Skype might release this in the near future. Possibly around the same time Windows 7 is released with its touchscreen capability. µ

I'm with Sopp

That's a pretty dumb thing to write, re touchscreens. Heck, the MSI Windtop, which the Inq reviewed(!), comes with Skype preinstalled and the touchscreen works just fine. That machine is running XP, by the way.

Nice improvement kids.

This is welcome functionality. Trying to dial numbers with no keypad was not intuitive.

isn't touchscreen enabled

Currently the downloadable version of Skype isn't touchscreen enabled.

That's like complaining that Office from MS isn't touchscreen enabled on a normal pc.

Touchscreens are hardware. If you install Skype on a pda that has a touchscreen is works fine.
