Vendors look to AMD for all-in-one PCs

Atom's graphics is pants for bigger screens
Friday, 18 September 2009, 11:20

AMD IS LIKELY to score well with PC vendors making all-in-one systems with 20-inch or larger screens.

According to DigiTimes, PC vendors are giving the thumbs up to AMD because Chipzilla's Atom systems are next to useless when it comes to driving graphics on large displays.

Some vendors don't plan to adopt Intel's processors and chipsets for their 20-inch and above all-in-one PCs. They are concerned that Intel's low-end CPUs and graphics components don't perform well enough and are too expensive. Thus they're probably going to be looking to AMD.

Intel's Atom based systems are good enough for screens smaller than 19 inches, which is probably how Intel wants to play it. Both it and Microsoft have been encouraging manufacturers to use more expensive chips and software for anything with screen sizes larger than 11 inches.

But PC makers want to sell all-in-one gear with larger screens so that people can watch videos on them.

Several vendors have already moved to AMD's platform for their all-in-one PCs including Acer's Gateway ZX2301 which has an 18.5-inch display and an AMD Athlon 2650e processor. BenQ's nScreen i91 and i221 both have AMD Sempron U210 CPUs and MSI's AE2010 uses an AMD Athlon 2650e.

Maker of expensive printer ink HP has also taken this approach. Its TouchSmart IQ780tw with a 19-inch display uses an AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58 CPU. µ

20+ What?

Any system that is to play HD can not touch Intel's crap. I would not even trust it with DVD playback. The Atom was such a huge step back in performance it was rediculous.

atom is weak

I'm a happy owner of a 9" acer netbook, powered by atom.
It's great for a mobile system, but a sad joke for video playback. =]

Nvidia Ion to the rescue

A single core Atom with Nvidia 9400 gpu pushing 1080p:

ION

The part of the system that holds back the atom for video playyback is the 945G chipset. The Ion chipset allows for playback of Blu-Ray and a higher resolution on desktop work.
The main problem is the cost of such a system. The entry level 945 is around the £50-£60 mark, whereas the entry level ION is £130. You're effectivly paying £70 for better graphics. Granted the overall board is better too, with better connectivity, but thats due in part to the ION chip.
This is where AMD may be able to win out, by producing a product with lower cost point than the Atom-ION combo, but with equal (or better) graphics capabilities

Why not use a Celeron

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, stick a Celeron or low end C2D in that thing. Jebus people, why is this so hard?

@ Dan

@ Dan

Because it costs Intel more to make a celeron, plus a fast Celeron isn't going to cover up the fact that Intel's onboard GPU is just crap. I'm forced to use this Intel trash at work and at times I just want to throw the thing out the window.

At home I recently got a low end AMD that has ATI onboard graphics, it smokes my work PC at everything graphics related from just surfing the web to playing media. Intel makes decent CPUs but their GPUs just plain suck.

Bad Reporting on here

The HP IQ780tw is a nearly 3 year old computer. HOW IS THIS RELEVANT? Not only has HP changed styles entirely, they've also changed to Core 2 Duos in the TouchSmarts.

NOW, if you want to talk about the new non-touch screen All in One MS200's, that is another story. It uses a 1.5GHz AMD Athlon X2 3250e Dual-Core processor, a 256MB ATI Radeon.

@J - AMD 3250e WOW!

22W dual core desktop processor? That's dead sexy! I don't care it's only 1.5Ghz. That's plenty of processing power on a tiny sip of juice.

Why these vendor use a crap?

Intel must be punished these vendors for their rebelion. Intel as number 1 company is a natural company that will be owned everything. Intel Inside Everything is a goal that these vendors must to reach for

Back To The Future

How did these two ever mate up?....Circa 2005--5.5lbs ThinkPad T42 ATI 7500(32mb), Intel Pent. M 1.5 cpu, 1gig, 14.1" TFT, 6 cell bat. gives almost 6hrs., 8 cell available.

Still selling today (fact. refurb.) under $300us with docking stations.

I don't see where much progress had been made in laptops. You can surf the web, check e-mail and play movies on your cell phone screen.
