OPERA SOFTWARE has launched the latest version of its popular web browser for mobile devices, claiming improved speed and usability.
Opera Mini 5, out now in beta, features a sleek new design to give the browser a more intuitive look and feel, the firm said. Also included is tabbed browsing, enabling users to browse several sites simultaneously, and support for touch screen as well as keypad-based browsing.
A Password Manager function acts as a "virtual memory bank" to store all a user's passwords for email, social networking and other online accounts, according to Opera.
Finally, Opera Mini 5 features Speed Dial, providing users with pre-selected web sites on loading the browser to jump straight to the content they want.
"The idea of navigating the vastness of the web from such a small screen can be a daunting leap, which is why we have long committed to make the browsing experience you are familiar with from your PC, easy to do on your mobile phone," said Jon von Tetzchner, chief executive of Opera Software.
"With new sleek navigation buttons, tabbed browsing and Speed Dial bookmarks, you are never more than a click away from where you want to go on the web." µ
I've been a fan of the Opera mini browser for quite a while. Have version 4 on my N95, and more recently 4.2 on my N97.
I've been playing with 5 beta on the N97 all morning and it really is very good. It has a couple of things that need fixing, like the ability to turn off the virtual touch keyboard, I already have a keyboard on the phone thanks, but it's nice if you don't want to open the phone up.
Overall it's incredibly usable and stable for a beta. Certainly beats the Nokia supplied Facebook app on both counts!
Very good browser! tested the new beta a little on my Samsung U900 (soul), works like a charm!
If you do not have a proper browser on your phone, you would do yourself a favour getting this one!
I might give it a try, although I don't use Opera on my desktop, I'm looking for a better browser for my Nokia e63 than the built in one (which isn't bad, just not great).
I wonder if it does e-mail too?

Works quite well on the Blackberry Tour 9630.
Good for them for actually trying to do something else besides launch anti-trust appeals. I always thought Opera should stick to mobile browsers instead of competing in the already dead desktop browser "market."
@BB, wow, are you ignorant or what?
"Good for them for actually trying to do something else besides launch anti-trust appeals."
Something else? Opera filed ONE antitrust complaint against Microsoft, and with good reason.
Opera has ALWAYS delivered, and has always survived and made money. One antitrust complaint doesn't change the fact that Opera is profitable, growing massively, and always improving their products.
"I always thought Opera should stick to mobile browsers instead of competing in the already dead desktop browser "market."
Actually, Opera's desktop user base has grown by 65% in 12 months. Desktop revenue in the same period was up 100%!
Not exactly a dead market..!
(see end of post for 'ON topic..:) )
"Opera's desktop user base has grown by 65% in 12 months" ROFL ROFL!!!
yes, 1% marketshare to 1.65% marketshare is huge!! :D :D

broke the 2% barrier in may, but I think someone needs to *shutup* the whiners at HQ, and get the devs fixing stuff... Ithink the downturn in sept was due to disappointment in the 'new feature', but no comparability fixed!!
Opera mobile is good, but even that is being badly affected!!

Trouble is the average intelligence of the mobile market is a LOT lower, not helped by minimal forum help...
