CHINESE SCHOOLS have started removing the Green Dam censorship filter in defiance of a government order that they should use it.
While China had backed down, following an international and domestic outcry, on a plan to preinstall the Internet filtering software on all new computers sold in the country after July 1, all schools and Internet cafes in the country were still supposed to install it.
The idea was that the software would protect children from porn or sites that the glorious Democratic People's Republic feared would corrupt their minds and turn them into Imperialist lapdogs peddling trinkets to wealthy Capitalist hyenas. As if that would ever happen.
But some schools have chosen to uninstall the filtering software because it conflicts with the teaching software that they need for normal work. Apparently once installed the Green Dam software broke the software used for school administration.
A spokesman for the Chongwen District Education Commission told Reuters that it had received shedloads of complaints from schools about problems with the Green Dam software.
The Internet filtering software, developed by Jinhui Computer System Engineering, has been roundly slammed by the technology industry as badly designed even for those looking to protect children. Apparently it can cause other software to crash.
The Beijing City Education Commission has since agreed to let schools uninstall the Green Dam software. µ
