Packard Bell announces dot m/u

A netbook with notebook specs
Tuesday, 15 September 2009, 15:15

PACKARD BELL HAS today announced a new product, the bizarrely named dot m/u (or moo). The firm reckons that the device will straddle two markets, notebooks and netbooks, potentially making it a notbook.

The moo notbook is about an inch thick, weighs 1.4kg and comes with an 11.6in screen - making us question the whole netbook/notebook thing all over again. It retails for about £400.

It's as chic and fashionable - PB's words - as you might want in a computer, and comes in two colour options: black and red. Sorry, 'NightSky Black' and 'Cherry Red'. The device has a glossy cover, shiny hinges, a matt interior and 'attractively designed curves and details'. Since when did notbooks become cars?

All of this aside it looks a heck of a lot like a couple of parent company Acer's Aspire units, presumably making it as chic and fashionable as they are.

Although most netbooks come with an Intel Atom processor, the Moo comes with either a dual or single core Intel ULV (ultra low voltage) chip meaning that it can run for longer - up to eight hours. It also packs in a hard drive up to 500GB (pricing for this option is not known - even to Packard Bell), round about 4GB of RAM, Windows 7, a multi-card reader, and WiFi and Bluetooth.

On top of this it has an HDMI port and Dolby headphone technology - which apparently provides multi-channel sound. PB said that these made it a real entertainment device, or if you prefer, an other people's train journey ruin-er.

The dot m/u will be out on October 22nd. µ

MSI wind and Acer Ferrari One

Interesting, MSI has the U210 to be available in days, it sports the Athlon Neo 1.6Ghz (not sure how does this compares to Intel ULV, but comparing to Atom, the Neo is overall better in performance. I suppose this also makes battery to perform less. Also if its the single core version you will be missing hyperthreading). Comes with HDMI and the known revamped low power version of the ATI X1250 powering the 1366x768 12.1 inch screen.

On the other hand, I watched at youtube a video of the new Acer Ferrari One. And holy s*** its really sweet. With ATI HD3200 and dual core Athlon Neo. You can't beat that for the price.

On the cheap front, a sweet gateway is around for less than 400 american bucks. Sporting an ATI X1270 low power version, and Athlon L110 (pre-Neo?) that comes at 1.2Ghz. Someone at youtube overclocked this minibeast to 1.6Ghz, extra processing power enough to make it play 1080p movies smoothly.

Ok, everything I mentioned is AMD... but everybody seems to knows the intel offerings pretty well.

It's a rebadged Acer

This is a re-badged Acer 1410/1810T/1810TZ, which has been available for some weeks. Even the available colors match.

Still, it's a sweet machine.

ULV = Mediocre Performance

£400 = about USD650 = about NZD1000. Windows 7 probably accounts for about a sixth of that price. Are they going to offer a cheaper Windows XP or Linux version?
