Sandisk releases fastest Compact Flash cards

64GB with 90MB/s read and write speeds
Tue Sep 15 2009, 11:04

SANDISK HAS RELEASED what it claims is the fastest removable storage card on the market.

The SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash card has 90MB/s read and write speeds, and ranges from 16GB to 64GB.

"The new SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash line is the direct result of SanDisk's passion, commitment and breakthrough engineering innovation to provide best-in-class Flash memory cards," said Eric Bone, vice president of retail product marketing at SanDisk.

"The SanDisk Power Core Controller delivers unmatched write speed and reliability, providing photographers with a spectacular combination of performance, capacity and peace of mind that images are safely stored."

While SD cards are more popular in the market, CompactFlash technology has higher transfer speeds and is used in sectors where data throughput is vital. Some had predicted that CompactFlash would lose the removable media market due to its large size, but the format has found a niche in the high-data market. µ

megabarn?

"BTW, smart ass Björn, an Mb is a megabarn (a cross section). An Mbit is a megabit... Can you remember that?"

Well Mb is commonly used as an abbreviation for mega bit just like MB is an abbreviation for mega byte. I must admit with my 25 years of IT experience, I have never heard about the megabarn before. Maybe it's more correct but it's not commonly used in the IT world. Can you count that?

From Wiki: "Megabit (Mb, or properly: Mbit), a measure of amount of information commonly used in the combination Mb/s (megabit per second) to express the rate data is transferred"

To the one who was late to the party...

"Iain Thomson cites SanDisk correctly"
If you were quick enough you would have found Iain Thomson had amended the descriptions in his article as appropriate since Björn and I commented. Iain had originally used lowercase 'b', or 'megabarn' if you like

90 MB/s is correct

Iain Thomson cites SanDisk correctly (see SanDisk web page). 90 MB/S means megabytes per second.
BTW, smart ass Björn, an Mb is a megabarn (a cross section). An Mbit is a megabit. That's right, the abbreviation for bit is bit. Tit for tat, bit for bit. Can you remember that?

CF cards---PATA SSDs.

CF cards in $5-$15 adapters are also just about the only PATA SSDs you can find... Work great as HD replacements in older machines, assuming you can fine tune the OS to cut down on the writes.

MB and Mb...

You do know there is a tiny bit of difference in speed between 90MB/s and 90Mb/s?

bit or byte?

90Mbit per second is not fast, that's only 11.25MByte per second, which is only x75 speed.
